Family Ties In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
In this paragraph I will show my personal connection to a theme of family-ties in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. On a page it says that “He talked so much that we all quit listening to what he said” (Hurst). I connect to this because my brother too is annoying because sometimes he never stops talking. Yet he talks with such an exotic vocabulary whenever he never stops talking. On another page it says “But doodle couldn’t keep up with the plan”(Hurst). I connect to this as well because my youngest brother doesn’t always listen or focus, but sometimes he follows with such

No one cherishes his or her family constantly. That is only an unavoidable truth. In spite of this, A Thousand Splendid Suns proposes that there's nobody more critical than your family. The novel likewise proposes that the idea of "family" stretches out past blood relatives. Consider how Mariam and Laila build up a mother-daughter relationship, or consider the bond amongst Tariq and Zalmai that starts to develop towards the ending of the novel. Now and then family is your blood, and every now and then it isn't—yet your family, however you define it, is always at the center of your life.…

In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis,” the first-person narration enables the reader to see the narrator’s emotional changes as he grows up with his “invalid” brother. The story was told by the brother, who helped Doodle overcome many challenges he faced due to his disability. For instance, The narrator was seen as self-centered. “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.” (Hurst, n.d., 4) For the reader, it seemed selfish of the brother that he taught Doodle to walk to benefit the narrator himself, not necessarily Doodle. As well, because the story was told only by the brother’s perspective, there was no way to know how the other family members handled Doodle’s…
