As you reflect on this week’s readings, discuss the most important competencies a Master’s prepared nurse leader should have for your chosen specialty CSM, INF, NED. How do these competencies guide your own practice? Does your career plan include the competencies you have identified? How important is specialty certification for today’s master’s prepared nurse?…
I have been a nurse for 14 years, mostly in the Emergency Department, and have become aware of the growing population and the need for Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP’s). According to Walden’s University Catalog (DEC. 2013a), FNP’s are defined as “advanced practice registered nurses with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage health issues in patients of all age groups, from birth through senior years.” My goal as a FNP is to provide advanced health…
As one comes closer to matriculation in a given nurse practitioner (NP) program, the necessity to plan for the future is essential. These plans must include certification, licensure, and scope of practice. Amy is a new graduate from a family nurse practitioner (FNP) program and wishes to relocate from her home state of Tennessee to Missouri as she wants to practice in a rural area.…
Family nurse practitioners (FNP) are advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) who work independently or in collaboration with other health care professionals to deliver family-focused care. In 2014, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners reported over 205,000 nurse practitioners in practice with nearly 55 percent of all NPs focusing on the family (American Association of Nurse Practitioners [AANP], 2015). Given the broad nature of the “family” patient population concentration, FNPs provide an extensive range of healthcare services that revolve around the family as a whole; from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counseling throughout…
The competencies of the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) are built from the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) competencies. The DNP-FNP competencies expand the FNP role in scope and focus. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) lists nine NP competencies: Scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, Technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery systems. Ethics, and independent practice (NONPF, 2012). In this post, I will discuss the nine FNP competencies and how the eight DNP- FNP competencies expand the scope and range of the Advance Practice Nurse (APN).…
Advanced Pharmacology has increased my knowledge and helped in preparing for the role of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). This course afforded me an opportunity for outcome #3, MSN Essential IX, and #5 Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies to be met. These outcomes consisted of using contemporary communication modalities, recognizing nursing practice at the master level, and recognizing nursing practice at the master’s level, and technology and information literacy competencies.…

Being in the medical field for the past ten years, I have seen the growth and changes in the medical field. When I began my nursing career as a medical assistant, I noticed many other nurses continuing their education to be able to have greater hands on approach in nursing. This opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that a nurse can do, whether it’s with direct patient care or being a resource to patients and other nurses around. After completing my RN in May of 2015, I decided that I really enjoyed being a mentor and teacher to other nurses. That is why I am continuing on with my education in hopes to one day receive my Master’s degree in Nursing and be able to utilize the knowledge and skills that I build, to educate patients. I still…
Explain how the artifacts in your portfolio represent you as a learner and a healthcare professional. Due to the education received in the BSN program at Western Governors University I am a more knowledgeable and professional nurse. With every course completed at WGU I have increased my knowledge base and improved my critical thinking skills. Within this portfolio is a variety of work I completed while attending WGU and is a representation of my work as a student: which I have integrated into my nursing profession to provide the highest quality of care to my patients. Discuss how your portfolio represents your professional strengths.…
Nursing is a profession that constantly evolves to improve itself. There is a high demand for nurses all across America. Excellent nursing practice is achieved by understanding the history of nursing and integrating the milestones achieved with the present practice. Through advanced education and new technology the nurse can provide the patient with the best care and promote community health. Knowledge gives us power to change and advance in healthcare. My mission is to demonstrate excellence in clinical care by my commitment to evidence-based practice research, continuing education, and by delivering culturally competent patient…
To pursue my career as a family nurse practitioner is not only challenging intellectually, but on a personal level it is also rewarding to me. It is inspiring in itself to know that, I will be playing an important role in peoples’ lives by helping them achieve optimum health. The nurse practitioner advance degree will increase my knowledge and understanding of the science of nursing. It will provide an opportunity to help me learn in-depth physiological aspects of the patients. Moreover, a nurse practitioner degree will give me the professional autonomy to diagnose, to order labs, to prescribe, to educate on the importance of prevention and manage the overall care of patients. Nevertheless, the advance nursing career will provide me with the flexibility to practice in many areas; such as hospital settings, specialty clinics and primary care clinics. Being a family nurse practitioner will allow me to develop…
While researching texts written and published about Nurse Practitioners, I have found that Nurse Practitioners are rapidly becoming the top health partner choice for many Americans. Nurse Practitioners have been servicing patients for over forty years. The NP role had its initiation in the mid-sixties in response to a lack of physicians in the United States. They can perform very extensive and concentrated examinations; distinguish and treat common keen illnesses, as well as laboratory tests; and educate and instruct patients and their loved ones about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and possible health care options. In all fifty states Nurse Practitioners are allowed to prescribe medications to patients, including controlled substances. Only twenty-six states allow Nurse…
Nursing is a profession within the healthcare field that focuses on caring for the sick and unable. Nurses differentiate themselves from other healthcare professionals by having alternate methods of care, educational requirements, and different scopes of practice. The word nursing is very broad because there are various titles one can go by when providing nursing care. Although there are many different roles in nursing, they all correlate to one another to provide the best care possible for an individual patient and their families.…
“Quack! Quack!” she exclaimed. “Yes it is bath time!” I replied as I gave my patient her nightly bath at my very first job as a nursing assistant for disabled adults. I remember initially being so excited to learn new procedures, medications and diseases. However, what I ultimately valued most during this experience was forming trusting, ongoing relationships with my patients (and learning that “Quack” meant bath!). The inimitable bond formed caring for these individuals motivated me to seek out a career in which I can provide meaningful and personalized care over time. Advanced practice nursing as a family nurse practitioner will allow me the opportunity to provide primary care services to individuals with chronic conditions beginning in childhood…
