FAFSA: Personal Narrative
Coming from a low income family, I understand my parents won’t be able to assist me financially. FAFSA is a life changing opportunity, and so are scholarships and government grants. Scholarship money will ease the fees for tuition, books, living, and everything I need to attend the University of Texas at Austin. I have a passion for hearing other languages, it’s amazing to me. The structure, tone, and expression changes completely! I watch reality south Korean shows, Japanese anime, and read biographies from people who have traveled to other countries like India. Currently, I have apps and dictionaries for french and ASL to reach my goal: to become multilingual. The best opportunities are in the beginning, and I plan on taking advantage of

When first posed the questions of how do I fit in at a college and how my extracurricular activities and experiences would benefit the college, I was not sure where to begin writing. To be perfectly honest, I think I would be a good fit on almost any campus because I believe I am adaptable to my surroundings and have a solid foundation that would make me an asset anywhere in the nation. While the previous sentence may come across to readers as egocentric or egotistic, I’m puzzled at where to begin because I also don’t think I’m outstanding anywhere compared to my fellow students academically speaking. On the other hand, it is almost a forgone conclusion in my mind that I have experienced more in my years than the majority of my peers. Also, as a result of many of these experiences, I’ve been able to get a jump start in my field of choice compared to where anyone else in the nation going into my career would likely be. Overall, I would say I have…

An experience that makes me proud during my first year of school was failing. It was a wake-up call, a realization that I could overcome a difficult obstacle due to the mistakes I had made. Therefore, I dedicated all my time to make-up all the classes I received low grades in. I pushed myself to persevere and not become a high school drop-out; I refused to be labeled a failure. I worked twice as hard in the classes I had received low grades; so when I was taking them again I would pass with a better grade I would be satisfied with. I managed my time efficiently to give myself enough time for each class and receive help when I asked certain teachers who offered tutoring. I took advantage of all extra credit assignments when offered, I believed…

When asked, “what is something I don’t know about you?”, my response would almost always be, “I am the youngest of six children.” I have a bizarre family and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Growing up, I always had a playmate, an advice-giver, a listener, and a role model (or five). Unfortunately for my parents, though, having six kids comes with a hefty price tag. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to afford to continue his or her education into the college level. Financial aid helps those in need to continue their education, however, financial aid does not help everyone. Because of how the system works, these people must present their parent 's income on the FAFSA to see if they qualify for any financial aid.…

As a youngster, most people are taught to read and write, yet about 17% of the world’s population is not literate. I am fortunate to be viewed as proficient in two world-wide spoken languages. Learning how to be literate in a new language can be extremely rewarding in the long run because it opens more career opportunities and is useful to be accepted in an academically advanced institution. For instance, being bilingual in English and Spanish has given me the opportunity to travel to the United States to receive a proper education in a safe environment. In order to reach the level of English I have right now, I had to go through several obstacles, including numerous classes…

What is Dual language? Dual language is a form of bilingual education that teaches students, as young as pre-k programs, literacy and content in their native speaking language. These programs typically start in kindergarten and continue for the next few years, many are now continuing into middle school and high school. The need for dual language programs in increasing as the years go by. The growth of so-called “dual language programs” has been swift over the last decade (Loeb, 1999) and it continues to rise after a decade past and decades to come. As a child, I have memories of the first day of school. I remember starting school and feeling very frightened when I didn’t comprehend what the teacher was explaining to me because she was speaking a different language. I grew up in a Spanish speaking home and attending school was where I first encountered the English language. As many other struggling students, I learned English the hard way. I learned English because I needed it in order to advance in school and “fit in” with the other kids. I am grateful for the implementation of the dual language program.…
