Which brand of paper towel is most absorbent?

Aim:
The aim of this experiment is to see which brand of paper towel absorbs the most water out of a 200mL beaker.

Hypothesis:
In this experiment my reasearch has shown that Kleenex Viva would be most likely to absorb the most water as to the amount that the Woolworths homebrand would because of its thickness and the texture of the paper.

Variables:
|Independent variable |The independent variable is the brands of paper towel being used. |
|Dependent variable |The dependent variable is the amount of water each brand of paper towel absorbed. |
|Controlled variable |The liquid being absorbed (water) and the amount of water originally in the beaker are the controlled |

Equipment:
In this is experiment I will need the following equipment;
A beaker filled with exactly 200 mL of water
Stopwatch
4 different brands of paper towel

When you did your hand wash experiment, you decided a variable to test, say, hot vs cold water, you called this variable an “experimental variable” since it was the variable you were testing experimentally. In order to get meaningful data, you need to keep other things the same, for example the washing time had to be the same for both, you called the washing time a _Control_______ variable.…

For this experiment our dependent variable was the paper with yeast on it, and our independent variable was the concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide we put in each solution. We tested the amount of time it took for the peroxide to break down yeast at 3%, 2.25%, 1.5%, .75% and 0% concentration. The fastest reaction time was 1.7 at 3% concentration. We…

Controlled variables in the experiment include the type of beaker used (150mL max), the amount of water used for each trial (100mL), and the amount of drops of food coloring used for each trial (2 drops). These things were necessary to keep the same in the experiment because if they were changed, it would skew the data and make it inaccurate.…

Some sponges are made for different reasons, but all serve the same basic purpose. They are made to absorb liquids. It doesn’t matter if the sponge is from the sea, or from a factory, they both use wicking and surface tension in order to absorb sponges. This use is what allowed the sponge to soak its way into history.…

Some paper towel brands may have false advertising claiming that their paper towels “are the most absorbent paper towels on the market today”, when in reality, they`re not (Ostling, 2010). According to Ostling, the Uline Shipping specialist states that “Bounty is the most absorbent paper towel on the market today, so he decided to prove that there is a more absorbent paper towel other than Bounty. Ostling proved that Uline Shipping false advertised about Bounty. He tested Bounty, and four other brands and there was one brand that absorbed almost 26% more water than Bounty. What Ostling did was he filled beakers up with the same amount of water, enough for all brands. Then he tore a full sheet of paper towel from each roll. Next, put each sheet into the beakers of water each for five seconds then observed how much water was left and subtracted that from the original amount. That is the amount absorbed by the paper towel (Ostling, 2010).…

Throughout the experiment the location of the liquids will stay the same. Also, the temperature of the room will stay the same. The mug that the liquids started in will not change so the results will have a more accurate reading.…

While doing research on how to best design my paper towel experiment, I came across two other experiments that were relevant to mine. The first was a diaper absorbency experiment conducted by Vanessa W. in 1999 to determine which brand of diaper was the most absorbent. She used the same concept I will be using in my experiment by using water to test absorbency and measuring the amount of water left after each test. The second was a paper towel absorbency experiment conducted by Samantha P. in 2000. This experiment is very similar to the one I will be conducting, except she used a different measuring tool and method than I will be.…
