Examples Of Uncertainty In The Sneetches
One reason humans have a tendency to treat each other differently is because of uncertainty. This can be seen in The Sneetches when they kept switching whether or not they had stars on their bellies. "The Sneetches switched their stars and mistreated the ones that weren't like them"(The Sneetches). This shows uncertainty because they were unsure whether stars or no stars was better, so they made others feel that they were in the wrong. Another example of uncertainty is when they treated Sylvester McMonkey McBean specially because he could help them change whether he had stars or not. In the Red Umbrella, Jennifer tells Lucia about how Betty isn't very smart, "'Don't worry about her. She thinks she's God's gift to Grand Island, but it's all

In Go Set A Watchman when Jean Louise and Henry Hank get into a dispute with each other, Hank is trying to get Jean Louise to see that the world isn’t perfect, and that in Maycomb County there are different types of people in the town, also that people in the world do judge based on your past and your families past. For example in Maycomb you are known and judged based off of your last name, in To Kill A Mockingbird it was said that, "There's four kinds of folks in the world. There's the ordinary kind, like us and the neighbors, there's the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes.". ( Lee pg# Chp23)…

Pretend you are driving along on the highway. You see a person on the side of the road having car problems. This is person is wearing an Armani suit and driving a Porsche. The next day, you encounter the same incident but, this time, it is a man wearing baggy jeans with holes in them, a dirty shirt and he looks very unclean. Would you be more likely to stop for the man in the Armani suit, or the the second man? I know that I would stop for man #1. The reason I and most of our society would do so, is because we have a horrible habit. The habit is unintentional and we do it not meaning to hurt anybody This habit is stereotyping people by the way they look or talk based on what society considers normal. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Scout, Atticus and Tom Robinson are victims of being stereotyped by others. Each has to cope with being stereotyped. Scout and Atticus have the ability to change their ways in order for people to respect them, unlike Tom Robinson, who is stereotyped as a mutant to the town of…

From television to magazines the mass media is all around us, silently shaping society. Many people do not realize how much media can influence how they view the world. Children are the most vulnerable to the media’s influence. Through their daily consumption of television, literature, and culture, their cultural lens is being formed. Some influences the media have are unintentional however; many individuals are using the influence of media to shape generations. An example of an individual is the world-renown author Dr. Seuss. This man did more than write books that purely entertained children. When looking into his stories one can find that he addressed a social issue in most of his stories. He used his creative and unusual style of writing to slyly influence the life of children for generations. One of his more blatantly sociological books was The Star-Bellied Sneetches and Other Stories. Later becoming a movie, this story told a tale of seemingly naive creatures that learned tolerance. However, when taking a closer look, one can there is so much more being revealed. In Dr. Seuss’ The Star-Bellied Sneetches and Other Stories he addresses the issue of social stratification and unknowingly reinforces its importance to the flow of a society.…

In “First Principle” by Nancy Kress and “Postcards from Monster Island” by Emily Devenport, readers can see how judgemental humans can be towards other people they do not understand. Some people believe that certain people should be a certain way and that one change in the system of humanity will make the world end. The problem with some people is that they are small minded and not open to change. They do not realize how much they can emotionally and mentally harm someone when they with what they say or how they act towards other. People are who they are and as a community humans should accept that. Humanity cannot change individuals but they can work together to make the world a better and safer place to live in.…

The idea that it’s hard to see past barriers you have become accustomed to, is also seen in “the breakfast club”. The five people in detention all look very different and we come to see they represent different social groups – all looking stereotypical for their role. “you see us as you want to see us... you see us as a brain, and athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal... that’s the way we saw each other”. Because they look stereotypical for a certain group, they feel as if they have to belong to it. This creates barriers between them automatically. They do not want to accept and become part of the others’ life style. These stereotypes emphasise differences in reality. It generalises the outward consensus of the school, but by doing this it successfully illustrates a very real point. They have become blinded towards one another by the comfort of belonging.…

    Correspondence Bias

We have a tendency to draw inferences between people’s actions and their personalities. This is what’s known as a “correspondence bias, or attribution error.” These biases, or errors, occur when we automatically link what we view as “bad or inappropriate behaviors, with internal personality flaws, rather than taking into consideration possible external factors, such as environmental causes, that may account for the behavior in question. For example: when the clerk at Wal-Mart doesn’t smile while she’s handing me back my change, I assume that she is not smiling because she is unfriendly and rude. When in reality, she’s not smiling because she has a headache and feels ill e.g. outside influences that are beyond her control. Overlooking…

Everyone in life has different views of the world because of their experiences and beliefs. People went through many obstacles in life which alters their belief system. Once their belief system has been constructed, they are in a habitual cycle which makes them hard to be same with others. No people are alike. We are all different people. With this knowledge, I believe that people view things according to their habitual lifestyle. For example, a person who are stereotypical may view people or judge them by race or individual's character. These people will tend to view society as if everyone did not come from the same family but different places and everyone is categorized. However, some people may view things by emotions and actions. People perceive things differently as the author states, "Just as self-concept, identity, and physical factors act as filters on our perceptions, our personality also affects how we perceive others" (Dobkins, pg.68).…
