Examples Of The Irony In The Ransom Of Red Chief
The Irony of Red Chief
The situation irony in The Ransom of Red Chief creates humor and developing them by giving little hints about what will happen and what might happen. Situation irony is a discrepancy of what will happen and what might happen. In movies or TV shows. The Ransom of Red Chief has a lot of examples of irony.

The first example is how the boy thinks that he is going camping but really he is being kidnapped and sold back to his parents. According to paragraph 16 sentence 1 it states"I like this fine. I've never camped out before" This means that the boy didn't know what was happening and he just enjoyed it. He talked and talked on and on after that while eating. They probably expected him to be afraid or scared, but he seemed quite happy with living in a cave with two men that he has never seen before in his entire life. Also how the little boy just seem to take over and be the head of office or something like that. In Paragraph 12 it says"Ha! cursed paleface do you dare enter the camp of Red Chief, the terror of the plains." Which basically means that the little boy didn't know what was going on and he didn't care he was just having fun and making the best out of being away from home.

The next example is what they expect the boy to be like when they pick him up form his house they said that he put up a

Within the short story “Invitation to a Murder” by Josh Pachter, there were numerous examples of situational irony—situations that involve an unexpected twist. The first example of situational irony was the title. People generally would not send out invitations for witnessing a murder. Usually, people would want to have no witnesses if they were committing murder. This is symbolic and represents how the rest of the story is interlaced with situation irony. Another example of situational irony is Eleanor Madeline Abbott inviting twelve well-known and highly esteemed law enforcers to her husband’s murder. This is extremely ironic because there were twelve men invited to the home; twelve people serve on a jury. In turn, the group of men acted…

One last technique the author uses to keep the reader’s attention is situational irony. Situational irony is when something entirely different than intended happens. Situational irony holds the reader’s attention by making a plot twist more entertaining. “‘We try to be civilized here.’ ‘Civilized? And you shoot down men?’”(75). This quote shows situational irony because General Zaroff is saying he’s civilized, but he hunts down men.…

Secondly, situational irony is a discrepancy, or difference between what's expected and what really happens. One such example of this type of irony occurs for the accused; The punishment of "witches". Do they die because they truthfully say they aren't witches or live with the lie that they are? Goody Proctor was a genuine person, and yet died with the truth that she was innocent of witchcraft. What is more important, morals, or your own life? You're the judge of the case.…

In every form of entertainment whether it be a movie, book, or play there has to be a problem. For the problem the metaphorical significance is the substance and the vapor. The point of the crucible is to get rid of the substance that is inside the flask. This is saying that the society is trying to get rid of the witch rumors that are going on in Salem. In the play the judge is was trying to get rid of the problem by executing people that were considered witches.…

Situational Irony- Occurs when incongruity appears between expectations of something to happen, and what actually happens instead. " Clevinger was a genius... a Harvard undergraduate... [going] far in the academic world... In short, he was a dope." (Heller, 68) Heller uses this quote to reveal a constant problem in what we conceive as intelligent. We normally assume that Harvard graduates are the smartest people; however, Heller is talking about the difference between book smarts and street smarts. This is important because in war, there is no real need for book smarts.…

Irony is an event that the reader expects to happen, but is the quite opposite, usually for a funny or dramatic effect. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Fahrquar is sentenced to death by hanging by the federal military during the civil war for attempting to burn a bridge they were controlling. In this short story, Fahrquar jumps off of the bridge with the noose around his neck and his hands and feet tied, but he still lives. This is an example of irony because the reader will expect him to die instantaneously, but suddenly it was as if the rope grew longer and he fell into the water. As he ‘escapes’, sharpshooters aim and fire, but not a single round will touch him. At the end of the short story, it explains how Fahrquar runs all night to get to his family, just as…

To start off we are going use verbal irony. In “Home Alone’’ when the criminals are in Kevin’s driveway and the head burglar says “ go check it out.” the other criminal responses by “ What now.” THe head criminal responses with “ No Tomorrow! YES NOW!!” So this shows that the head criminal is being sarcastic. In “Ransom of Red Chief’’ the verbal irony is used on page 74 paragraph 4 it states “ ‘You had better come at night, for the neighbors believe he’s lost. I couldn’t be responsible for what they would do to anyone they saw bringing him back.’ “ This shows that he wouldn’t hold the people back if they try hurting Sam and Bill for bringing him back. Another kind of irony used is situational. For “Home Alone’’ the situational irony is used when Kevin doesn't know his family has left for vacation but we do. He thinks he has sent them away but they actually forgot him. This proves by watching the movies you can see the family leaving and him thinking he has made his family disappear. So we can stuff happen in the movie that Kevin actually doesn't know that has happened. The situational irony for the book “Ransom of Red Chief” is on page 74 paragraph 3 it states “ ‘ You bring Johnny home and pay me $250 dollars in cash. I will then agree to take him off your hands.’ “ So this shows the you would never see the dad wanting the criminals to pay for…

In the story "The Gift of the Magi" Della and Jim both gave away their most prized possessions to get each other gifts that they can not use. "'I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs'" (Daniel 292). People would not have expected Della and Jim to both sell one another's prized possession to get gift so it surprises them. In the story "Thank You, M'am" after Roger fails to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’s pocketbook, she takes him back to her apartment to feed him food instead of turning him in to the police. "'Then we'll eat,' said the woman. "I believe you're hungry—or been hungry—to try to snatch my pocketbook'" (Daniel 89). This story takes a completely different outcome than what the reader would have thought and it surprises the reader through situational irony. Another example is in the story "The Sniper" the sniper kills an enemy sniper who turns out to be his own brother. "[T]he sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face" (Daniel 215). The reader would not have expected the enemy sniper to be his brother. This ironic situation creates a surprise to the readers and a twist in the story. An interesting story has surprises from situational irony to engage the reader's attention to keep the reader…

There are various examples in which the dramatic irony is explicit. The King has high expectations of the deeds that Macbeth is going to fulfill. He trusts Macbeth and he has just been assigned to be Thane of Cawdor. “He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust”. The King is referring to the former Thane of Cawdor who betrayed him, he’s committing the same mistake twice, but he seems to be too naïve, not considering the fact that maybe Macbeth can betray him too. Macbeth is not planning on doing so yet, but he is being tempted to. The…

Harwood depicts the memories of the persona in the first section, ‘Barn Owl’, where the loss of innocence due to childhood naivety is illustrated to be the foundation of the persona’s development of identity. This is shown when the persona shoots the “Owl” with the gun of the “father”, a representation of his power and authority. Here, the owl epitomizes both wisdom and authority, which the child seeks to resist. Thus in their mind, the child is destroying authority. The diction of ‘Barn Owl’, unlike its counterpart, is much simpler and holds an essence of child-like awareness, for example, the short and monosyllabic language of “Let him dream of a child Obedient,” shows the persona trying to exhibit an image of cunning and rebellion, however it is obvious to the responder that the persona is prying into complexities the she does not completely understand. As the responder I can understand the persona’s refusal of authority and therefore forgive the childish ignorance which can be relatable to anyone. The following lines where the father regains the power and instructs the…

The irony in this story is that they both bought gifts for each other, which they could no longer use. It uses a specific type of irony called situational irony it is defined as “an event occurs that directly contradicts the expectations of the characters, the reader, or the audience.” The author used this type of irony to surprise the readers, and directly relate it to the biblical story of the three magi. It adds a sense of humor when the readers find out what they did, but also a connection towards the characters feelings. But how could irony and also suspense be used in the other work?…
