Examples Of Observing Stereotypes
Observing Stereotypes Through Personal Experiences - Daniel Paulsen

After discussing this report with my parents, they remembered a time last year when I came home and complained about a group at school. I recall last year around June, when I passed a group of friends. All standing in a circle gossiping by the gym. There were five or six - three girls, and I think two or three guys. Easily, I could tell that two of the guys were in a relationship with two girls because they were holding hands. I was opening my locker a few feet away so I could easily eavesdrop without much suspicion. As I twisted the lock around to my combination, the lock opening with a click, and I heard them mention a name of someone I knew. One of the girls, who was holding

While I was waiting for my meeting, I was approached by another student, Chelsea Hernandez-Silk. Ms. Silk informed me that she thought Ms. Bracker was acting inappropriately. I then asked Ms. Silk what she was referring to. Ms. Silk informed me that Ms. Bracker was telling people that she was uncomfortable, and didn’t want to be alone with me. Ms. Silk told me that implication of her comments was clear, that I had done something threating or sexual which lead to Ms. Bracker being uncomfortable. Ms. Silk further informed me that “It was so secret that Ms. Bracker had told everyone upstairs.” When Ms. Silk said, “everyone upstairs,” she was referring to following female students who lived in the same room: Kristen Bracker, Chelsea Silk, Joni Gerrity, Precious Ndebele, and Elisabeth Fields. In addition, she talked to Ms. Williams, who lived in a different room. These means, that at a minimum, Ms. Bracker had spread the false information to 6 of the 8 female students participating in the study program, plus at least one of the male…

This brief is in regards to the Bristol School District and their policies. A seventeen-year old student, Suzie, attended Central High School in Bristol, Virginia. During Suzie’s relationship with her boyfriend, Cyrus, she sent him some very revealing photographs of herself. After their relationship ended, Cyrus forwarded some of the most revealing photos to upper classmen in the school. This began to draw unwanted attention to Suzie. It became such a disruption in the school, Suzie’s parents contacted the school principal, Mrs. Sheevers, and forced her to investigate and appeal the situation thoroughly. Principal Sheevers, then confronted Cyrus, who denied having and sending the photographs. Then Principal Sheevers sent the school’s security officer to find Cyrus’s phone to check it for the photographs. When Cyrus didn’t have his…

A representativeness heuristic is when an individual judges a situation based on a stereotype rather than on actual probability. An example of a representative heuristic that I have experienced from my own life experiences happened when I was playing basketball ball with some friends. While we were playing one of my female friends came and asked if she could play basketball with us. Because she was a female me and my friends wouldn’t let her play because we thought girls weren’t as good at sports as boys, and she wouldn’t be able to keep up, and paly as well as us.…

What image do you see when you hear the word homeless? I use to think of words like dirty, lonely, and also needy. The true definition of homeless is without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Stereotyping is a common thought through our human minds, which means oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. I learned this summer on my mission trip to Madison, Wisconsin, that homeless people are not what we think they are.…

Stereotyping is a form of pre judgment that is used everyday in conversations and in the media. There are many groups of people that are being stereotyped in society today. Whether or not you are the one being stereotyped or you are doing the stereotyping, in the end it hurts people’s feelings and brings down self-esteems. There are a few stereotypes in society that I have encountered which include the quality of people with tattoos, Athletes are not good students, and Hispanics working in the landscaping…

“How a Self-Fulfilling Stereotype Can Drag Down Performance” is an article written by Shankar Vendantam. This piece was published in the science section of the Washington Post in 2009. Vendantam’s article discusses how negative stereotypes may impair group member’s performance in tasks that evoke these stereotypes. This is a phenomenon, known by scientists, as “stereotype threats.” Current research supports the notion that stereotype threats negatively influence people when it comes to race and gender.…

Stereotypes. Stereotypes play a major and huge role today in society negatively and positively. Stereotypes can form truthful and untruthful results that can mentally, emotionally and physically destroy a person, race or culture which we see today. Stereotype is a fixed over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Meclod). I chose to write on the topic stereotype because in society today we as humans stereotype one another all the time and do not realize it. Research have found that stereotype exist of different races, cultures, or ethic groups (Meclod). Today our world is so based off what the next person thinks and what they will say and do if something is not done a certain way and it bothers me. Don’t judge a book by its cover, no one should be judge for…

Stereotypes are everywhere, including school. In a poll taken by 20 DHS students, 55.5% of the students answered that most stereotypes are about certain groups of people such as athletes, cheerleaders, etc. One example would be “Athletes don’t care about grades” or “Popular girls are always mean.” However in reality, maybe athletes do care about their grades, but just don’t have enough time to do all their homework. Maybe popular girls are actually nice, but seem mean due to rumors other people have made up. We don’t ever think about what happens “behind the scenes” owing to the fact that society has already given us an image of what happens. Even Samara Green, the author of “Fairy Tales and Gender Stereotypes”, said “Maybe it’s because of the books and movies we grow up learning from and the characters we idolize.” There are numerous movies out there that show the dumb jock and mean girl stereotype such as “Mean Girls” and “Clueless.”…

African Americans are better at sports than white people. This is a stereotype. People think that African Americans are better at sports, but is this really true. Think about Chris Paul, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant. You think that those players are the best in the game, but are they. There are very good white players that are legends. Think about Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, John Stockton, and Steve Nash. All of these white legends are very good. Some African Americans are good at sports, not all and there are white players that are very goof if not better than some African Americans. Stereotypes have a big impact on society and we should just ignore them so that our society will be a better one.…

When you are a child, you do not really understand that people are different. My elementary school had children of all different cultural backgrounds, but all that mattered to me is whether or not you wanted to play jump rope with me at recess. I knew that people looked different, but I did not know that the way you looked and the background you came from affected your standing in society. My first trip to visit the Philippines was something I will never forget. It was my first time in a foreign country, and on top of that, a country that spoke a language I had no idea how to speak. At the end of a trip to a local market, my mother waved down a tricycle, a motorcycle with a side carriage attached for passengers to sit in, to take us home. As the…
