Everyone has different personality traits. Odysseus has both hero qualities and not so heroic qualities. This epic poem is called “The Odyssey”. It was written by Homer, an ancient Greek poet. Epic hero qualities are traits the hero character of a story has. They include strength, loyalty, intelligence, and courage. One would think Odysseus has many epic hero traits, but he also has many traits that are not heroic. There are many examples of his heroic qualities. Something that shows loyalty is when he says, “So we moved out, sad in the vast offing, having our precious lives, but not our friends.” This shows that Odysseus is loyal because talking about not having his friends anymore and being with his men. He also has strength. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under the rowing benches…” shows this because it takes strength to tie three men down to a ship. When he shows courage, he says “We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship: as for myself I took my twelve best men and went ahead.” in which one would notice Odysseus had the courage to go see who the enormous man was when he reached Cyclops Island and told his men to watch the ship for him.…
One would be right to think that Odysseus is hero because he is brave, strong, and smart, however he uses all his hero qualities for himself. To begin, Odysseus is a hero because he is brave. The text states,“‘Now!’…
From the epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, Odysseus lack heroism presented in his actions. His success is due to the fact, he is able to intelligently apply himself in dire situations. However the majority of feats are unnecessary, as he tends to indulge in these predicaments due to his selfishness and curiosity. For example, at the time of Lotus Eaters, Odysseus sets course to the Lotus Eaters to discover who are natives of the island. His curiosity ended up of 3 of his men getting paralyzed and brainwashed by the Lotus Eaters.…
One trait that Odysseus has is being a great leader. One way that he is a great leader is because he had won the war against the Trojans. The way he won was that he had a brilliant idea of making a Trojan horse. The reason he made a Trojan horse is so he can hide inside of it and attack the Trojan. Another reason why Odysseus is a great leader is because he had helped his crew through many obstacles. One example is when Odysseus and his crew were approaching Scylla and Charybdis and his crew scared because of the white smoke. So then Odysseus…
A hero is somwone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself- Joesph Campbell. Odysseus is an an optimal hero in both the physical and metal sense. In the physical sense he is a tremendus hero, because he was challenged to all these extreme dangourous adventures; he umexpectly walks out alive after questioning for ten years long and facing the most extraordinarily dangerous creatures and people. Why would Homer set up this whole exciting experience with all the strange comings that Odysseus has to go through, if this was not to show that this stong and intelligent man is a great hero of the Greek world? What will a strong itelligent hero of greek times look like?…
Odysseus is a hero. How is Odysseus a hero? According to Google, a hero is “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.”. In the Odyssey, I saw Odysseus as a hero because he was patriotic, humane and dexterous and there are a few times I see these qualities in the Odyssey. In this essay, I will discuss how Odysseus revealed his valiant and lionhearted ways throughout his long-lasting, venturesome journey.…
In addition, he is unbelievably clever and witty. One can find throughout the Odyssey that Odysseus was the man that saved the Greeks in the Trojan War and helped them win the brutal war. He “in every kind of strategy [used in the war] proved himself supreme” (Book III 120-121). The idea of the Trojan horse, how they won the battle, was developed by Odysseus. Also, we see Odysseus various times in the Odyssey making his way through the most difficult situations by using his wits and cleverness.…
A big part of being a hero, is leadership. When Odysseus and his crew show up on the island of the lotus eaters, Odysseus sent his crew out. They found the lotus eaters, people who eat lotuses which makes them forget all of their goals and worries. When the crew is offered some they to forget what their goals and worries are. Odysseus soon finds out what is going on and went to investigate. When he saw what had happened to the crew he tried to get them off the island. In this moment Odysseus dragged them off the island and forced them to grab the oars and sail off. This is not most people's idea of a strong leader. On the other hand, he was able to save his crew. In conclusion, Odysseus knows when to be a strict or kind leader which contributes to why he is considered a hero.…
One quality that separates Odysseus from the many other heroes of his time is the ability to be clever and cunning. Odysseus shows…
Movies, which show more and tell less, allow potential heroes to prove their heroism with actions and not words. Each movie that we watched for class showed heroism in a different way, much like the ancient Greek and Roman poems told about heroism in a different way. Partially a product of their time, each movie approached a World War in a way that reflected the values of their time, much like how Odysseus’s cunning was praised by the Greeks and condemned by the Romans. However, I think that the sequence of movies matches up quite nicely with the sequence of poems. Comparing The Grand Illusion to the Iliad, Saving Private Ryan to the Aeneid, and Inglourious Basterds to the Odyssey brings out contrasts, like the definition of heroism, between…
In the spiritual sense Odysseus is a hero, because he remains faithful and loyal to his wife and household. Although he has been wandering away from home for almost twenty years, the only thing that…

Superheroes have become increasingly popular in recent times and most people have their favorite from Superman to Batman to the Avengers. Not all heroes have to be superheroes with superpowers. Many people can identify heroes in their everyday life as well. Heroes can be someone that helps a person, for example many people consider their parents to be heroes because of the support they provide them in life. The difference between a superhero and a hero is that heroes are normal people just trying to be there for others while superheroes are made up characters in a book or movie with extraordinary powers. Mistakes are part of everyone’s life, but the difference between a normal person and a hero is that when a hero makes a mistake they work to fix it or overcome the problem. In the book the Odyssey, there are many problems and obstacles that Odysseus has to overcome in his attempt to get home. Odysseus has many traits that make him a hero, for example he is both physically and mentally strong. His…
In life there will always be a hero, protecting the angels from the burning souls demanded by the devil . Life has heros for many reasons, such as protecting the people of the world , but not every hero is a satisfying hero. In the book the odyssey, Odysseus is expressed as a great hero because he is a man of steel , not wanting to quit for the adventures he begins. Odysseus is a reliable hero because he's strong, intelligent and caring to his men and the people around him.…
This is close to his only concrete character flaw, yet it easily overshadows any of his other traits. As CliffsNotes says, “He is confident that he represents virtue even when a modern audience might not be so sure” (Character Analysis Odysseus). His prideful arrogance follows him throughout the entire epic, yet it is most blatantly exhibited after he and his men’s escape from the Cyclopes’ cave. As if Odysseus simply can’t resist taking credit for his defeat of the monster, he declares, “Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; / Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (Homer 9.18-19). This was a rather unintelligent move, as he able to escape by cleverly tricking the Cyclops by saying his name was Nohbdy, and he only threw his disguise away because he wanted to be famed and known for defeating the monster. Odysseus’ pride is one of his most noticeable shortcomings, and similarly, one of his most…
