There are many claims as to who is responsible, but strong superstitions point to Friar Laurence, the cleric in Romeo and Juliet, as being responsible for their deaths. Throughout the play, Friar Laurence is seen whenever something goes wrong with Romeo or Juliet. For example, in Act 4, scene 1, when the prince exiled Romeo from Verona and Juliet was to marry Paris, she petitioned for help from Friar Laurence; otherwise, she would kill herself. In order to prevent Juliet from killing herself, Friar Laurence gave her a sleeping potion and assured Juliet that Romeo would know about their scheme.
