Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
"The Cask of Amontillado," written by Edgar Allan Poe, is a short story about revenge. The story starts with a man named Montresor vowing retribution on Fortunato because he insulted his family. After acquiring Fortunato, Montresor brings him down into his family's vaults to go try some Amontillado. Then he traps Fortunato in the crypt to kill him. In this short story, Poe uses dramatic irony to inform the reader of things the character is unaware of in order to create a suspense.
Poe uses dramatic irony in this story to show Montresor's false concern for Fortunato. One example of dramatic irony in the story is when Montresor expresses concern about Fortunato's health. As they were walking through the catacombs to the Amontillado Fortunato

    Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the characters do not. The entire story is based on dramatic irony, given that the audience knows from the beginning that Montresor is plotting his revenge and poor Fortunado does not. A more specific example is the line where Fortunado says he will not die of a cough. The audience knows that he will endure Montresor’s revenge soon. When the characters first meet in the beginning of the story, there is also dramatic irony because Fortunado obviously thinks fondly of Montresor and is happy to see him.
