The impacts of globalization on the coffee farmers in Guatemala can be positive but they can also be negative. Positive and negative impacts are mainly based off of how much other countries are buying. Buying their coffee greatly impacts purchases of proper farming supplies and the ability to be able to purchase food to feed there families. Originally globalization has a terrible impact on the coffee farmers in Guatemala, now globalization is good for the farmers and is helping because they are continuously moving product. When you purchase a cup of coffee from Starbucks you are helping the farmers in Guatemala depending on where and who the coffee was bought from.     For some people, globalization is so feared it is synonymous with world destruction. In the end, for all we know, maybe this will be proven before it is over. In reality however, there are many good things that have resulted from globalization(1, Premise). Let’s for a moment focus on the economy, even though there are many other advantages that have been brought forward that will also be discussed. Many Americans do not appreciate how efficient our markets are, in this case efficiency in reference to supply and demand is number one. These efficient markets allow economies to grow. As many have learned in a global world, when one economy grows, it spurs growth in all the other economies that are connected to it. In this way, reverberations of success are felt across the world, even when they are most profound in one area. Needless to say, this is a very good thing. This is partially a result of what I just mentioned, but wealth equality around the world goes much deeper than that. Perhaps a better phrase than wealth equality is “standard of living.” Globalization does several things that are undeniable at the end of the day. First and foremost for one it creates jobs, which is a priority to the economic success of any market(2, Premise). Along with job creation it improves infrastructure while it also allows more people to live at a higher global level every day. Mainly regular access to medicine, clean water, food production, housing, etc., things we take for granted here in the United States. Many if not most third world countries do not share these same day to day things we categorize as necessities. Things they would refer to as luxuries. Globalization results in partnerships between countries and organizations, which in turn could help bring these countries along in many of these areas.     There are several problems with globalisation. This can be illustrated by the creation of multi-national companies; developed countries can stifle development of undeveloped and under-developed countries. For instance, the European Union offer subsidies to farmers across Europe, which allows European farmers to have increased yields. So for a country like Kenya, they cannot export or sell agricultural goods as well as they could have. This economical factor puts Kenya at a disadvantage as there is a surplus of crops, thus making the agricultural goods cheaper or even worthless. Europe dump surplus of crops like tomatoes in countries like Ghana for free, this decreases the chances of development in GDP as Ghanaian farmers themselves will not be able to sell their tomatoes, so competition and the chance to create a better economic well-being is slandered. Trade blocs are created to protect a continent or group of countries, for example, around 10749 tariffs were implemented to protect EU farmers – Europe has kept low tariffs on Kenya’s flower exports, which has resulted in them becoming the largest exporter of cut flowers to Europe, although this shows the political power the European Union has over Kenya’s exports, this shows how restricted Kenya is in terms of globalisation as they have limited trade access so it hinders development. Kenya maybe be benefitting economically from flower exports but socially they are getting worse, as cash crops such as flowers are seen as being more valuable because it brings higher income, the land that is used for cash crops cannot be used for agriculture, this is an opportunity cost, which could possibly increase malnutrition amongst the population – this could result in famine.…

This conclusion was clearly stated at the Communiqué of the Lyon Summit of the G7 in June 1996: “ In an increasingly interdependent world, we must all recognize that we have an interest in spreading the benefits of economic growth as widely as possible and in diminishing the risk either of excluding individuals or groups in our own economies or excluding countries or regions from the benefits of globalisation.” This paper outlines the major historical developments of globalisation and specifically describes the effects of globalisation on coffee, the most important item in Uganda’s international trade. In particular, this report attempts to analyse the impact of liberalization on the production, marketing (supply), demand as well as prices and revenues from coffee in Uganda. Central to this report is the impact of globalisation on the lives of needy rural farmers whose main source of income is coffee.
