Doubting Darwin Summary For a long time now, it has been debated in the USA whether or not Evolution should be taught in public school classrooms due to the controversy over evolution and creationism. In the early 2000’s a parent in Dover Pennsylvania went to the district school board with complaints that his child was being taught lessons in science that contradicted his religious beliefs; the subject being evolution. Joshua Rowand was taught by his family and church that the world was created through creationism and felt that the theory of Evolution did not support his beliefs and, because it is only a theory, was teaching a form of religion in a public school. Evolution is a theory based on evidence through fossils and other means that states human beings and other complex organisms were developed over time and all originated from simpler, single-cell organisms. Because it is based on facts and evidence the argument was presented to the opposers that the teaching of evolution was simply another scientific theory that needed to be taught in classrooms. The people that supported creationism then decided that creationism, too, could be taught as a scientific theory if presented in the right manner. Thus, “intelligent design” was created. The idea of intelligent design is virtually identical to that of creationism. It is the idea that a “being” of some sort created the entire world and everything in it within a short amount of time. While there is no evidence of this, it is argued that the holes in the theory of evolution themselves are evidence supporting intelligent design. It is an endless controversy that may never be put to rest. Evolution, while not a proven theory, is an accepted theory by many people because of all the evidence provided that supports it in the past.     Where do we come from? This question has disturbed mankind for generations. For a couple thousand years the answer to this question could be found in the Creationist theory. The Bible tells of how 6,000 years ago God created Earth and all its living creatures in seven days. Then in the nineteenth century Charles Darwin published his findings about his theory of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species.     Ethan Frome is set in turn-of-the-century New England in the fictitious town of Starkfield, Massachusetts. A time when women were still dependent on men and the goal of attainment for men was survival. Survival meant whether that goal was achieved through the male as the designated bread winner or as a female via the means of securing a proper marriage. In the story of Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, the theme involved the challenges of the conflict between passion and social convention, and the constricting effects that a harsh winter climate can have on the human spirit, it takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. The theme of this story almost seems to conspire to make Ethan a passive, unhappy victim of circumstance, weighed down by his duty to his wife, his bitter existence as a poor farmer, and the strain that Starkfield’s frozen landscape places on his soul.
