For the response essay, I have chosen “Everyday Use” story which is written by Alice Walker. The story is about a mother and her two daughters. The mother is referred in the story as Mama and her two daughters are Dee and Maggie. Mama and Maggie live together in a traditional way while Dee has moved out and has become modernized. The story represents conflict between the characters which has rooted from their different characteristics and views regarding traditional and modern way of life. The two sisters Dee and Maggie have different characteristics and opinions therefore they don’t get along well like sisters and it causes conflict between them. As result Mama always there for both daughters to support and show them the right path and try to bring peace and balance into the family. …show more content…
The story is also narrated from her point of view and she is the protagonist and fulfills great responsibilities throughout the story. From the story it seems Mama has great personality. There are few reasons that why I like Mama’s character and how it stood out to me. First of all she is the head and mom of the family. She has done her responsibilities beautifully. She did good preparation when Dee was coming home from college. For example, she cleaned the yard and made everything look beautiful and fresh. She was a good support for her daughters. For example, although they were poor she sent Dee to school to get education as it is stated in the story, “we raised money, the church and me to send Dee to send her to Augusta to school” (Kennedy, & Gioia, 2016, p.79). I liked the way she knew the importance of education and wanted her daughter to get her education and be successful in her

In the short story, "Everyday Use," Alice Walker teaches us lessons on true inheritance; what it is and who can receive it. Two hand stitched quilts become the center of conflict in the story. They are also used to symbolize the true inheritance. Like a quilt, a person's world view is made up of events, circumstances and influences that shape how they see and respond to the world. "Everyday Use" is a story of two worlds in conflict. Mama, acting as the narrator, guides us through the interaction of the two very different worlds embodied in her daughters.…

First, the mother affectionately called Mama describes Maggie her younger daughter. Mama tells us that Maggie has burn scars on her arms and legs from a fire at their old house. She didn't actually say that Dee set the fire but she implied that she did (107). The mother describes the way Maggie walks by comparing her to a dog that has been run over by a car. The mother said, "she has always been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle" (107). According to the mother Maggie thinks her sister has always held life in the palm of her hands (106). Mama describes herself as a large woman big boned she called herself rough, with manly working hands, taking pride in her ability to "kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as any man" (107). Mama feels Dee would want her to be…

Everyone has a different culture. Whether it involves a different heritage than another person or a different upbringing their culture will never be the same. Two people can both be Italian and French, but one may grow up in America and the other in England, two separate places in which they live different ways of life. Culture is more than what a person is or where they come from. Culture is who they are including their traditions and customs, their art, their language, and their family. This is portrayed in the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker through the characterization of sisters Maggie and Dee.…

The short story, “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker portrays the relationship between a family and their issues concerning their heritage and values that are different to them. Clearly, the author Alice Walker incorporates her personal experiences into her writings. In the short story, the family lived a poor lifestyle and had to adapt to what they had. According to one source, “The Walkers lived in poverty, and as a young girl” (Cummings 1). Along with her lifestyle, Walker is able to include real details in her short story about being poor because she has been through it. Walker explains in her story as the character of Mama, “I never had an education myself. After second grade the school closed down” (21). Tuten explains that, “Commentaries…

In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” Mama, the narrator of the story, is rather distant with her daughter Dee and dreams about reconciling with her on a television show. Specifically, she imagines Dee expressing gratitude for all that she has done for her, while embracing her (Mama) “with tears in her eyes (Walker 315).” It is obvious that Mama doesn’t understand her daughter’s life choice to adopt an African lifestyle and feels that Dee is rejecting her origins and family. Furthermore, the reader can see that Mama has a troublesome relationship with Dee by the amount of tension between them. This strained relationship becomes clear when Dee “went to the trunk at the foot of (Mama’s) bed and started rifling through it (Walker 320).” The narrator…

Have you ever not seen eye to eye with your mother? In Alice Walker’s short story “Everyday Use”, we are shown how many of the choices we make and the things we value create our identity. This story focuses on two characters, mama and her daughter Dee (Wangero), who struggle to see the same way about their heritage. Dee wants the things made by her grandmother, to not admire it as an artifact, but rather to remake it. She wants to take them, and change them to match her lifestyle as it is today. She loves them for the way they look. Mama, on the other hand, views the things from her mother as artifacts. She loves the items more than how they look. She admires the quilts because of their everyday use. Transformations take place between these characters. Dee’s transformation is more external than it is internal. She shows her transformation in the way she speaks, the clothes she wears, and her judgement. Mama’s transformation is more internal. She begins to see Dee’s real thoughts, and she stands up against her. When she takes the quilts away from Dee, she doesn’t only stand up for herself, but Maggie, as…

The description of Wangero and Mama’s personality and physical appearance reflect the era they both represent. Wangero, the new generation, appreciates heritage by perceiving things the way they are on the outside. Just like the flashy development of the modern time, she enjoys associating her background with African culture, and this flamboyant ideal Wangero brings “hurts” Mama’s eyes (Walker 28). On the other hand, Mama’s physical appearance is described as how a “large, big-boned woman” she is, but she feels that Wangero would want her to be “hundred pounds lighter” (Walker 24). Although this is very biased due to the fact that this is first person narrative, Mama ultimately believes that as a country woman in comparison to the new era Wangero is from, she will be perceived and judged by her physical appearance. Both of the characters physical appearances connect with their generation of time. Wangero correlates with her time because of the rise of technology and education that is given, her generation is seen as bright enough to outshine and “hurt” the older generation. On the other hand, Mama’s era is the opposite because how she looks to others in not a concern for her. Unlike Wangero, Mama’s values does not hold materialistically because she presents things as they are, not what she wants people to think.…
