Michael Patrick MacDonald’s book was fantastic. All Souls was a moving, exciting, and revealing book about the life of an average South Boston family growing up in the white, Irish Catholic Old Colony housing projects. There is a huge focus on the crimes, drugs, and violence that occurred within MacDonald’s neighborhood around the time of the Boston busing riots. MacDonald tells us about his brothers and sisters. Many of whom were victimized by crime, drugs, murder, and suicide. He also goes into detail about his strong willed mother who somehow found a way to raise ten kids, while at the same time dealing with abusive relationships, and living in the neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. All Souls has a large…

The following line, "I want to be improbable beautiful and afraid of nothing," relates to the starlings in the poem "Starlings in Winter" by Mary Oliver. The narrator of the poem wishes to be like the starlings that soar through the sky. The "improbable beautiful" wording in the line shows that the narrator does not want to be beautiful at first glance. This relates to the starlings in the poem because at first glance they are "chunky and noisy," but upon further observation, they are "acrobats" and :full of gorgeous life." The segment of the line, "afraid of nothing," also relates to the starlings in the poem. The narrator witnesses the starlings' stunning beauty in harsh, dangerous conditions. She sees them flying "even in the leafless…

A corruption of the faithful, an exploitation of the angelic, a destruction of the young, blanketed the earth in the fall of 1941. The gift of innocence, so blameless and pure, but at the presence of absence, eradicates life. The righteous and the sinful, the just and the unjust, produced social barriers of uncertainty. In Under a Cruel Star, Heda Kovály writes of a world filled fear and deception, of stolen innocence, flowers afraid to grow, and faith hidden in a shy little bird. Along with millions of jews, Heda’s life in Prague shook upside when the mass deportation began. The trains that carried her, had no remorse. The Nazis that took her, had…
