Everlost Hero's Journey

Although there are quite a few skeptics who believe ghosts do not exist, those who do may wonder what the earth is like to such trapped souls. In Neal Shusterman’s The Skinjacker Trilogy he answers the question of what the ghost world may be like, but with an imaginative drive, and this limbo between life and “where one goes after death” is limited. This is a breakdown of key concepts in the limbo; the “realm” is called Everlost, and only children and teens can cross into it. In Everlost, souls are called Afterlights, and some may have certain abilities depending on the strength and the will of his or her spirit or the condition in which he or she had been when crossing into Everlost. Allie is overwhelmingly clearly a novice when it comes to controlling her power until meeting Milo, who is also a Skinjacker. What institutes Allie as being so naive when it comes to using her ability, for starters, is the fact that she does not take advantage of it for the proper reasons, “Allie tried to limit her skinjacking to times she absolutely had to, but she only had so much self-control” (84) meaning she would skinjack for the purpose of experiencing the qualities of life which Afterlights no longer can experience, such as hunger or the satisfaction of consuming food, warmth, or feeling rain touch one’s skin. When Allie meets Milo, along with his pals Moose and Squirrel (Skinjackers as well), he teachers her of different and new ways to put her power to use and manipulate it. Milo plays much more of a role in the novel than just as a teacher for Allie, because there is an immediate indication to the reader that he will portray some sort of love interest for Allie, the greatest underlying clue perhaps being his
