Tough Exterior Most lessons in life are bitter-sweet, and so are many knowledgeable women. Aunt Alexandra in To Kill A Mockingbird portrays this very well. Although Alexandra Hancock is hypocritical and racist, she is also extremely loving. The south is harsh, yet has beautiful aspects, Alexandra Hancock makes this very clear. Due to Aunt Alexandra’s hypocritical, racist, and loving personality she shows Jem and Scout the beauty and flaws of southern culture. Aunt Alexandra is heavily involved with her missionary circle, and while on the surface this seems dignified and generous, it is truly hypocritical. Aunt Alexandra and her circle are willing to spend time and resources on impoverished people many miles away, yet cannot see the devastation of the blacks living blocks away from them. “Gertrude, I tell you there’s nothing more distracting than a sulky darky. Their mouths go down to here. Just ruins your day to have one of em’ in your kitchen”(309). This quote is extremely hypocritical; the women of the missionary circle are berating people of color, yet in the same breath they are sending money to poor people in Africa. Along with being hypocritical, Aunt Alexandra is also racist. She has little to no respect or blacks living in Maycomb. Not only is she a racist, she is not shy to let people know it. Her grandson Francis lets Scout know this, “Grandma says its bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again. He’s runnin’ the family, that’s what he’s doin’”(105). Aunt Alexandra makes sure even her young grandson knows how she feels about the black population in Maycomb. She cares way more about her family than the treatment of blacks. Her racism is also accentuated by her accepting and fair brother Atticus. Although Alexandra Hancock is hypocritical and racist, she had many redeeming qualities, one of which being a loving heart. She cares so

One of the prejudice events, was with her own family. Her Aunt Alexandra is proud to be part of Finch family. She only likes to associate with the people as the same or higher class than her family. Like whenever Scout and Jem invited Walter to eat she didn’t accept it. Also whenever Scout plays with Walter , she would get mad/upset. She had also said “He is trash, that is why you cannot play with…

In Haper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" the characters face adversity that develop the controversial, effective themes. Lee uses both racism and discrimination themes are represented in this novel, especially through the character Atticus's actions and words. Accordingly, Atticus believes that racism is wrong and despite what everyone else thinks, strives to see both races equally. For example, Aunt Alexandra moves in with the Finches because she strongly believes that Jem and Scout need a feminine mentor in their life but excludes Calpurnia, who is of the opposite race. She even attempts to change everything about how Atticus fathers his children and how he treats Calpurnia; including how he speaks to her at home.…

You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years. She’s a faithful member of this family and you’ll simply have to accept things the way they are. Besides, sister, I don’t want you working your head off for us – you’ve no reason to do that. We still need Cal as much as we ever did.’ (pg. 182&183)” When Atticus hears what Aunt Alexandra has to say, he doesn’t go and blow his top. Instead, he very caringly explains to her that they do, in fact, still need Cal. Even though Atticus doesn’t even remotely agree with Aunt Alexandra, he remains the very patient and calm man he is and is very gentle with Aunt Alexandra. Atticus could very well have gotten furious, not elucidated, or just flat out ignored her. Despite Aunt Alexandra’s constant badgering, Atticus held his ground. Atticus has a very special gift; he can be firm without being mean or rude. He used this technique with Aunt Alexandra, all the while being very patient and kind.…

    Atticus Maturation

Atticus is a white lawyer who lives in this racially prejudice town yet he is willing to stand up for a black man. A prime example of Atticus’ ability to help Scout mature is his advice and teaching Scout to not be judgmental of other people based on their appearance or actions. Atticus tells Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30) This quote teaches Scout a life lesson that changes her personality throughout the rest of the novel because Atticus is telling her to not be judgemental differs her from everyone else in Maycomb. Nobody in Maycomb considers a black person’s point of view. Everyone else is willing to judge people solely based on their skin color. On the other hand, Scout does not judge people and is accepting of everyone. Another example of Atticus providing Scout advice that influences her development is his reference to killing mockingbirds. “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something…” Miss Maudie responds to Scout by saying “Your father’s right….Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy….but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill…

In the novel, Scout’s aunt, Alexandra, comes to visit them for a while. She decided that Scout needed some feminine influence (Lee 127). Aunt Alexandra acted like a perfect Southern woman and was very comely. She wore corsets, powdered her face, and had tea parties. At these tea parties, she would gossip with the women of the town (Lee 128, 228). During this time in real life, the ladies who were considered proper wore dresses and skirts. They also need to behave with high moral standards to be considered proper. It was more important than what they looked like (Cruz). The actions of Aunt Alexandra being a proper woman in the South implies that Lee was influenced by real events and behaviors to write her novel. In the 1930s, it was considered improper for women to wear men's clothing, to curse, and to play sports. For a woman to do any of these things would be considered very inappropriate (Cruz). In the book, Scout wears overalls, unless she is going to school. She wears a dress then, but she does not like it very much. She also plays outside with her brother, Jem, and their friend, Dill (Lee 15). Scout gets into fights at school and once she beat up Dill because he made her mad (Lee 22, 41). Aunt Alexandra is very opinionated and tries to get Scout to act more like a proper Southern lady. She complains…

Aunt Alexandra, is the sister of Atticus and aunt to Scout and Jem. Social status is in high regard in her mind. She sees Calpurnia as more of an object than as a person. She does not accept Calpurnia as part of the family, as Atticus, Jem, and Scout do. Aunt Alexandra moves in with the family during the trial of Tom Robinson, because she feels as though Scout looks up to Calpurnia as more of a motherly figure. In ways she wants Scout to obey the social law at that time in Maycomb that black people were to be looked down upon. Aunt Alexandra says, “Put my bag in the front room, Calpurnia.”(169) She automatically takes the assumption that Calpurnia is more of a slave than a helper in the household. This quote shows Aunt Alexandra’s opinions on colored people, which are not very appropriate.…

    1. Atticus is in disagreement with Aunt Alexandra over many things. The first matter of disagreement is when at the table during breakfast Atticus talks too loosely and honestly in front of Calpurnia. He only does this is because she knows that he respects her and isn't trying to offend her. However from Aunt Alexandra's point of view she believes that he shouldn't talk like that in front of her, and declares that Calpurnia will spread the gossip all over the “Quarters before sundown.” Even though Calpurnia may or may not spread this gossip that Mr. Underwood despises Negroes, Atticus backs up the situation saying that everyone in town knows that it's true. Finally Atticus comes back at Aunt Alexandra saying that Negroes have the right to speak their mind. The second matter of disagreement is when Atticus defended Mr. Cunningham after their altercation the previous night, however Scout had a different point of view on this situation, saying that when Walter Cunningham comes back for the first day of school it will be his last. When Atticus tells Scout that she is not allowed to touch him at school meaning not to start a fight, Aunt Alexandra has a much different point of view. She believes that good things do not come out of these type of situations and technically speaking she tells Atticus that she told him so.…

In my opinion, Aunt Alexandra is a misunderstood character in To Kill a Mockingbird. Although some of the things she says or does is very annoying, I think that she is just trying to do what she thinks is best for everyone. Alexandra is just another woman who grew up in the old South. She is bold, bossy, proper, and everything you imagine when you think of the picture perfect Southern lady. She thinks what she's doing will help the kids for their future.…

By putting themselves in Boo’s shoes, they realized that because of everything going on, including the case and everyone’s negative outlook on it, he might not want to come out in fear of that negative outlook also applying to him. As Scout grows older she begins to understand more about the people she is around and different things going on around her. After learning that Tom was dead Scout, Aunt Alexandra, and Miss Maudie had to act like they didn’t know anything about it and go on with the ladies of the town. After seeing how Aunt Alexandra reacts, Scout thinks, “ I saw her head go up as she went through the door… after all if aunty can be a lady at a time like this, so can I” (Lee 318). Throughout the book, we get the impression that Aunt Alexandra is just as judgemental as everyone else. Here we learn when Scout uses Atticus’s advice, that all along she was just worried about Atticus. After learning this information about Tom Robinson, she was upset just like Atticus and Miss Maudie, and by putting herself in Aunt Alexandra’s shoes, Scout realizes there was a reason for everything she…

Aunt Alexandra shows that family is a necessary evil with her interactions with Scout. When Aunt Alexandra arrives at the Finch’s home to stay with them, Scout loathes her since she wants to change Scout and wants her to be more refined. Scout also despises her aunt since she thinks that Atticus is not raising Scout properly and offers to help her be more lady-like. Even though Scout may not realize this, Aunt Alexandra is strict towards her because she wants her to be prepared for the challenges she may face in life. Aunt Alexandra is not only trying to teach Scout to be more modest, she is teaching her to be more social. Aunt Alexandra said to Scout: “Speak to your cousin Lily’... ‘Who?’ Your cousin Lily Brooke,’ said Aunt Alexandra. ‘She our cousin? I didn’t know that.’ Aunt Alexandra managed to smile in a way that conveyed a gentle apology to Cousin Lily and firm disapproval to me” (176). Aunt Alexandra is trying to teach Scout that you can talk to people without being rude and offensive. Aunt Alexandra taught Jem and Scout, but mostly Scout is to act more refined. At the beginning of the novel, Aunt Alexandra was not excepting to the Finch family. As the novel came to an end she (Aunt Alexandra) showed that she is more accepting of her family “She brought me something to put on, and had I thought about it then, I would have never let her forget it: “Put these on, darling,” she said, handing me the garments she most despised” (354). That action showed that people do change people. At the Missionary Circle tea, Aunt Alexandra demonstrates how to be lady-like when she heard the news on Tom Robinson and she came back and pretend like nothing happens. Most importantly they learned to respect their family because you should always be by your family's side and respect their…

Atticus shows individual difference by how he is not as racist as the rest Maycomb County. A widower with a dry sense of humor, Atticus has instilled in his children his strong sense of morality and justice. He is one of the few residents of Maycomb committed to racial equality. When he agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man charged with raping a white woman, he exposes himself and his family to the anger of the white community. The rest of Maycomb are against him and do not agree on what he is doing. One of the people who are against him is his sister Alexandra; the only people who are on his side are Scout and Jem.…

Walter, Jem, Scout, and Tom are all very different because God created everyone unique. Therefore, one should not treat another unjustly because it would be the equivalent to treating God with injustice. Aunt Alexandra, Lula, and the people of Maycomb, unfortunately did not avoid these forms of injustice. In Tom’s case, this caused his life and family to never be the same. One should strive to avoid jumping to hasty, insensitive conclusions, put the race aside, and leave all prior biases behind and look deeper at one’s character. Be careful because injustice comes in all shapes and…
