Long-term causes of the war included the imperialistic foreign policies of the great powers of Europe, including the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, the British Empire, France, and Italy. The assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by a Yugoslav nationalist was the proximate trigger of the war. It resulted in a Habsburg ultimatum against the Kingdom of Serbia. Several alliances formed over the previous decades were invoked, so within weeks the major powers were at war; via their colonies, the conflict soon spread around the world.…

The first of these alliances was called the Triple Alliance. This alliance was formed in 1882. These members were Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. However, Italy was not a main actor in this alliance, because they had come to a neutrality agreement with France. Because of German ties to Austria, if Russia were to help Serbia, that would mean Russia would also have to face Germany. If Russia was going to have any involvement in the conflict whatsoever, the support of France was desperately needed. This need developed the second major alliance formed prior to World War I. This alliance was known as the Triple Entente. Like the Triple Alliance, the Triple Entente consisted of three members, and linked together Russia, Great Britain, and France. Russia and France had been in alliance since the year 1894, but Great Britain was added in by negotiation in 1907. This alliance provided a powerful counter alliance to the one previously established by…

By 1907 two groups were formed; these being the Triple Alliance (consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) as well as the Triple Entente (consisting of France, Russia, and Britain). The war was propagated by two major alliances. The Entente Powers initially consisted of France, the United Kingdom, Russia, and their associated empires and dependencies. Numerous other states joined these allies, most notably Italy in April 1915, and the United States in April 1917. The Central Powers, so named because of their central location on the European continent, initially consisted of Germany and Austria-Hungary and their associated empires. The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in October 1914, followed a year later by Bulgaria. By the conclusion of the war, only The Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and the Scandinavian nations remained officially neutral among the European countries, though many of those provided financial and material support to one side or the other.…

One of the students threw a bomb, which was then deflected by Franz Ferdinand. They rushed to the town hall and cancelled their visit. When they were about to leave, their chauffeur accidentally took a wrong turn and by chance Gavirilio Princip was on that road with a pistol, and shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand in the throat and his wife Sophie in the stomach.
