Euphemism In Ender's Game
In Ender's Game, euphemism is present while the government does not tell Ender the whole truth about his activities, which affects Ender’s actions drastically, proving euphemism alters people's decisions. When Granger travels to Ender’s house to recruit Ender to help destroy the bugger aliens, he used tons of understatements to persuade Ender to come. Granger tells Ender that he will fight for Valentine, Ender’s sister, who will be saved from the possibility of dying but, Ender is really needed to save humanity. This leads Ender to reluctantly agree to go with Granger. To convince Ender’s parents that the mission is safe, he fabricates the truth by saying, “War games. All the boys are organized into armies. Day, after day, in zero gravity,

In Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, the “mind game” is a constantly changing computer game made for the students and is used by the commanders of the battle school as a tool to monitor and analyze how the students are feeling. Ender Wiggin becomes increasingly obsessed with the game, specifically after he becomes stuck at the “Giant’s Drink”. At this point, the game seems to hit a dead end, with none of the options for the player to take being the right one and all of them ending in their “death”. The game would then reset itself so that the player might try again, and fail again. The Giant’s Drink is symbolic to many parts of Ender’s life; he sees, in the battle school, that following orders will barely…

Originality is overrated, or better said, it is almost impossible to find. Many pieces of literature borrow from texts before them to create a familiar atmosphere for their readers to enjoy and hopefully recognize in order to grasp a deeper understanding of the work. Allusions can be found throughout both “Goblin Market” and Into the Woods.…

As soon as Graff returns to his cabin, boys start picking on Ender because of Graff's work. The child behind Ender pokes him in the head repeatedly. Patiently, Ender times when the next blow would arrive, and breaks the assailant's arm. Ender's newest tormentor is that boy who broke his arm, Bernard. The students are introduced to the battle room for the first time. They wear stiff flash suits and have glass-like laser guns. Ender begins flying around and testing out the suit. He saw that pulling the trigger on the gun illuminated some light on the floor. The two new friends collect their closest friends, Shen and Bernard, and attack the other sixteen launch members. Later that day Ender's character is faced with two drinks, and if he chooses right, he can go to "Fairyland." The game is rigged, though, because all the drinks kill him and it cannot be defeated. The character's deaths are always gruesome, and Ender has tried and tried until the game shuts down. “Ender gets fed up this time, and decides not to play by the rules. His character kicks the drinks over and claws into the Giant's eye, knocking the Giant over and killing him. Ender is simultaneously excited and revolted. Ender thinks, "I'm a murderer, even when I play. Peter would be proud of me." The game then shuts…

Foulcher uses the adjective “bleak” to emphasize that this skill is miserable and depressing. This shows the reader that Foulcher has a negative view of the destructive power of war. When Martin responds to questions Foulcher uses euphemism to describe the deadly effects of the grenade. After ten yards the spread of shrapnel becomes “too loose to catch a man’s morality”. This shows that often when war is discussed the negative effects are often minimised while the positive aspects of heroism and loyalty to your country are emphasized. When the grenade is passed around the class it is called a “small war”. Foulcher uses this metaphor to show the reader that the grenade is symbolic of war and destruction. This…

April 15, 1843 Henry James was born in New York City into a wealthy family. James’s gothic novella, The Turn of the Screw has been criticized throughout the ages but no one is really sure what the story is really about. The book seems to be less influenced by James’s personal life and more by the Victorian time period.…

Figurative language allows readers to better understand the message that the author is trying to say. Personification allows writers to easily reveal what they are trying to say when descriptions fail them. By including personification, the author can clearly communicate how he felt at a specific time. As a reader, personification allows us to easier relate to the idea or feeling the author is conveying. Wiesel uses personification on page thirty nine, when he says “Remorse began to gnaw at me.” Remorse cannot eat away at a person, but it allows the reader to understand how guilty Elie felt when he did not stand up for his father. A second example of figurative language used in Night is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing allows the author to keep…

Ender's Game has many deep thoughts the reader can conclude. One of the important themes that the story has is the relationship between masculinity and femininity. I like to call the relationship between masculinity and femininity in Ender's Game “the circulation of features”. This name derived from the description and changes in characters. At the beginning the story gives the typical features of men and women. Women are emotional, but men are cold-hearted. At the end, we can observe that the features are turned over. Men expressed their emotions and what they really feel. Plus, women take responsibility and become harsh and cold. In fact, I am going to express the circulation of features in the different phases of the story starting from the beginning to the last chapter.…

This passage shows the reader that the “beast” wasn’t something they could just get rid of by haunting and killing it. The “Lord of the Flies” or the beast, represents human nature and the evil, savagery, violence etc. that’s inside of us. William Goulding wrote this book to show the readers that we, human beings are known to be savages by nature. In other words, humans tend to act inhumane sometimes when it comes to surviving or for any other reason. For example, Jack made fun of piggy and the other boys laughed, that is a sign of inhumanity or when in chapter 9 the boys killed Simon thinking he was the beast. This passage has three literary elements. Figurative Language was the most obvious one, due to the fact that Simon was having a conversation…

The book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck is a open and free thinking book, it's one of those books that makes you laugh and and makes you think a lot about it. This is all because of the figurative language and the protagonist of the story. Lennie the protagonist, is one of the most interesting characters that I've ever read of, he is like a small child that always needs help, and always looking for tiny and soft things to touch. It's one of the characters that can't be trusted by its own because if someone do, he will finish in trouble, but i feel that he is one of the most kindest character of most of the books i've read even doe sometimes he does not mean to do a wrong thing. This are some of the quotes of the book that tells you how is…

In in the following paragraphs of the story, the author used various effects to effectively convey the feeling and imagery of the story to the reader. In paragraph five the this phrase was first used “sounds that to the couple seemed as loud as men sawing through hard wood.”, this phrase being a simile was used to compare how loud the mice were to something the reader could relate to. This was effective because the reader can then used their past experiences to figure out just how loud the mice were. In this phrase he also used the word interminable to show that the sounds were not just one long loud sound but multiple sound right after another, which also allows reader to image how the sounds really were. Then, he uses the phrase “...the…

    Lord Of The Flies Euology

We are gathered here today to acknowledge a terrible loss; the loss of Thomas (or as some may have called him, Piggy). Thomas was an intelligent boy, and a good friend. I first met Thomas a couple hours after we crash landed onto that dreaded island. I made fun of him initially, by calling him Piggy in front of the other kids, even though he told me not to. But I apologized and we ended up becoming good friends. In our first couple days, Thomas didn’t want to play because of his asthma. I remember one time when I was swimming, he was standing on the shore watching, complaining about his asthma. I told him “Sucks to your assmar” and he ended up coming in, despite his asthma. From then on Thomas participated a lot more and was a bit more outgoing. While I was the leader, Thomas was the brains and advised me on various things. Without him we wouldn’t have made it far on that atrocious island. No one else seemed to realise how valuable Thomas was, as everyone else on the island disliked Thomas and saw him as whiny and annoying. I managed to get past that and saw him for who he truly was: an intelligent rational boy who was in need of a friend. I took pity, on Thomas: a boy who was made fun of his whole life. I stood up for him, talked to him, and played with him even while the others didn’t. In return he comforted me when Simon died, and stayed by my side through the entirety of our stay on that island.…
