Dr Montessori believed that from the moment child is born, he begins his journey to independence. She believed that every child is born with certain potentialities/Nebulae and an urge or Horme to carry out activities. Maria Montessori termed the child as the spiritual embryo. The child possesses within him, a pre-determined pattern of psychic unfolding which leads him to perform activities for his self construction, development and growth. This psychic pattern is built at the expense of the environment around him.

According to Montessori Children have been given special “creative sensitivities” to help them develop their own powers for reacting to life. One of them is the absorbent mind and the second is sensitive period.
Maria Montessori describes absorbent mind as a process in which child absorbs knowledge and impressions from his environment. The child undergoes transformation and impressions do not merely enter his mind; they form it; they incarnate themselves in him. In Montessori’s experience, the young child’s absorbent mind usually lasts till about six years, a period which she observed to the be divided into two-three year phases. Its the mode of action that subtly changes from first phase to second phase. The first phase is from birth to three years, where child’s unconscious mind is at play. The child's mind is like a sponge absorbing information, skills and impressions from the environment unconsciously. Conscious mind succeeds over unconscious mind.
