Martin Luther King Jr. once said "The basic thing I want you to see is that while this period (the protest phase of the civil rights movement) represented a frontal attack on the doctrine and practice of white supremacy, it did not defeat the monster of racism....The roots of racism are very deep in this country." I believe that racism is often an excuse for pessimism, racism is one of the worst diseases in America. Racism affects your way of viewing people by believing in dense stereotypes and restricts you from all the opportunities you could have had by being nice to whatever person racism is holding you back from. The civil rights were supposed to create a safe environment for African Americans, an environment with the same opportunities as other races and it did have a great impact with that but this dilemma is not completely resolved. We live in a world where one of my good friends Kenon, was pulled over when walking home from school for no reason.They proceeded to throw everything out of his backpack cracking his school laptop and then handcuffing him for being smart when he was questioning his rights. An environment America set out to create in the 60s can’t even be followed by the government itself.
