Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
Do you know what the 7 catholic social teachings are? They are matters in the Church about social justice, issues of poverty and wealth, social organization and the role of the state. Now that you know what those are I can tell you what option for the poor and vulnerable is. It is one of the 7 Catholic Social Teachings, that teaches us to respect the less fortunate, and homeless, and to not take what we have for granted. In this essay I will be telling you about some true stories, and telling you how we can try to prevent them.

His mother’s death meant the end of everything Daniel had ever known, or worked for. Without warning, Daniel was confronted with not only the reality of his mother’s death, but also with the "not knowing" part of his own future. His only option was to live with his mother’s boyfriend. Daniel tried his best to keep going. He kept his grades high, played in the high-school band, and even earned a place on the baseball team… all while holding a part-time job. But then, during his senior year of high school, his world fell completely apart... even more than it was. While being so depressed, Daniel became homeless. "I had a knife in my hand and began slitting my wrists. Everything hit me at once. My Mom died! I had nowhere to go! I had no education! I had nothing" he said. Left with nowhere else to go, Daniel went to live with a friend in Texas for a few months, then California, Iowa, Ohio, then back to Michigan... finally landing on the streets of Detroit. This innocent 16 year old wandered the streets for several hard months, sleeping in doorways and on park benches, suffering through the freezing cold days and nights. Finally, Daniel couldn’t take it anymore. As his wrists bled, Daniel realized he needed help. He ran to a phone, called 911, and was taken to the hospital.
