Essay On Lord Of The Flies Jack's Monologue
Dear Auntie, I don't think I can stand one more day on this dumb island. All of these boys are mean and don’t have any respect for me. Tonight me and my friends, Ralph and Samneric are heading over to Castle Rock to call an assembly with Jack and his tribe and telling them they need to listen to Ralph again, but first let me tell you about some of the preposterous things that have happened on this island. A couple days ago Ralph and I were trying to build shelters on the beach for us to sleep in. While we were working hard building them, Jack and his hunters were supposed to keep the signal fire going but he decided it was more important to hunt for pigs instead. There has only been one time we've seen a ship pass by. We missed that opportunity …show more content…
Everything was going great until Jack to asked “Who’s going to join my tribe”(150)? I couldn’t believe it! At first I thought nobody would join him besides his hunters, but I was wrong! The only kids with who decided to stay were the twins Sam and Eric. Shortly after this awkward episode, our attention was turned to noises we heard coming from the bushes. Out came one of the kids on the island covered in blood saying something about a parachute man. All of the hunters were too busy chanting, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood”(152)! They did not pay attention to who it was they just suddenly pounced on him and started scratching, hitting, and biting him. It was not my fault though, “It was an accident” is what i kept telling Ralph(157). Even ralph said I wasn’t a part of it, he said, “You were outside. Outside the circle. You never really came in”(157). Either way there is nothing we can do about it now, especially since most of the kids have gone off to castle rock with Jack, I can’t wait to go over there with that conch and tell him how things are gonna be. I still have one more story to tell you about what has happened on this stupid

Thinking about the possibility of rescue, Ralph proposes that the group build a large signal fire on top of the island’s central mountain, so that any passing ships might see the fire and know that someone is trapped on the island. Excited by the thought, the boys rush off to the mountain, while Ralph and Piggy lag behind. Piggy continues to whine about the childishness and stupidity of the group.…

Despite almost all of the characters going through transitions due to the changed circumstances, Golding depicts Jack as the most explicit figure. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other…The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs”. Initially, when Jack first shows up on the island, we realize that he is a leader of a choir, marching in military style. Although this foreshadows Jack’s totalitarianism and dictatorship, it still shows the typical characteristics of a typical teenage boy, wanting to take on leadership roles and smiling whenever possible. However, as Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and eventually putting on the mask, he turns savage and gruesome beyond return. The fact that he uses a spear to attack Ralph immediately after Piggy’s brutal death shows Jack has completely lost his rationality and sense of human being.…

He did not like that Jack and his gang would much rather hunt than do their assigned jobs. The only way for the island can run smoothly is if everyone does their part. Ralph states at a meeting “You hunters! You can laugh! But I tell you the smoke is more important than the pig, however often you kill one.” (81) and You could have had everyone when the shelters were finished. But you had to hunt---- (81). Ralph lets the hunters know that they are no better than the other members of the island. At the assembly reminded all the islanders that one of the first priorities that they all agreed on became less important over time, Ralph said “We all built the first one, four of us the second one, and me ‘n Simon built the last one over there.”…

Jack, as a "former chorister" and "head boy" (22) at his school arrived on the island eager to make rules and punish those who broke them, although, he constantly broke the rules himself when he felt it was needed to further his own interests. The freedom Jack had on the island allowed the dark side of his character to be revealed from under his outer shell of a civilized schoolboy. Jack represents the evil side of human nature.…

After a while, Ralph brought up the great idea of making a fire in order to signal the rescuers we would be on the island. I knew there was little time to waste just sitting around, so I led the group into the forest to gather firewood. Upon gathering wood, I was the one who came up with the idea of using Fatty’s specs as burning glasses. Still, I had never imagined that keeping a fire burning would be so hard! Later, I humbly offered the choir to maintain the fire in shifts. Everything went well until that swine Piggy decided to speak out again. He kept repeating himself about how building a fire was a bad choice, even though he didn’t contribute squat to anything to begin with. Still, bigger problems arose to overshadow his stupidity. The fire we thought had been put out actually spread and began burning down a chunk of the forest. To top it off, we are now missing a little shrimp with a mulberry-colored scar on his face. I remember him as the one who wouldn’t stop scaring others by talking about the “beasties in the forest”. Stupid kids always getting themselves into trouble. As the leader of the hunters, I will definitely find…

One way William Golding adds depth to Lord of the Flies is by drawing attention to important elements using irony. An example of this is through the character Jack Merridew, who is both the first one to suggest the creation of rules and the first to break them. During the boys’ second meeting on the island, Jack excitedly suggests that they have rules and that there should be a punishment when someone breaks them. One of the rules that is established is to keep the signal fire going. However, when it is Jack’s turn to keep the signal fire going, he abandons his post to hunt a pig. When Ralph confronts him about this, Jack is vaguely irritated by this irrelevance showing his disregard and indifference towards the established rules he had suggested…

The irony is this passage, where Jack is speaking to the group of boys as second in command, becomes much more relevant after reading further into the novel and seeing Jack undergo changes into a savage leader. His initial stance that rules are needed to keep the boys in line go along with his role that he had in England, where he served as the head of the boys’ chorus. After some time on the tropical island, however, Jack is the first boy to develop a taste for blood and violence, contrary to his statement that , ‘After all, we’re not savages.’ It is also ironic that as a secondary leader of the boys here, Jack is preaching an approach towards survival revolving around rules and obeying them, however, his attitude while being the leader…

Toward the end of the book, the boys have divided them selves into two separate halves. On one side there is Jack and his hunters, and on the other there is Ralph. Ralph has been warned that Jack and his tribe are setting out to kill him. Samneric say “Listen Ralph. Nerve mind what’s sense. —They hate you, Ralph. They’re going to do you. They’re going to hunt you tomorrow” (Golding 188). Ralph the goes and hides in some bushes when he hears the news. In order for Jack to find Ralph and kill him as well, Jack lights everything on fire, in order to get Ralph out of the bushes. All of the smoke from the fire signals a naval officer who rescues the boys from the…

Some people on this island just don't realize that they've got to put first things first if they ever want to be rescued. Today we could have been saved by a passing ship, had Jack and his stupid hunters paid attention to the rescue fire. You see, it's their job to maintain and watch the fire. Unfortunately, Jack and his hunters picked today of all days to neglect the fire and when a ship passed by the island, there was no signal to be seen because the fire was dead. When Jack and the hunters returned from their hunt, they were chanting a frightening chant and carrying a dead pig. Ralph reprimanded Jack for his lack of responsibility, and Jack got mad but he apologized. When I complained about the hunters' immaturity, Jack hit me real hard and broke one of the lenses of my…

Today I, Jack Merridew, called this meeting to discuss the future for all of us on this island. I recognize that for weeks we have been on this island, for weeks we have led a meaningless existence. I understand that you are all frustrated with the way things are. I understand because I was with all of you every step of the way, I experienced what you have experienced and I understand exactly what you feel: unhappiness about the state things are right now, craving for meat, longing for fun, and yearning to be safe from the beast.…

A group of boys find themselves deserted on an island after their plane crashed. One boy, Ralph, finds a conch shell and blows into it to bring all of the boys together. The boys elect Ralph to be their chief and he creates rules to gain structure for the group. Ralph focuses on important tasks for their long term survival, like building a signal fire. But, his second-in-command, Jack, focuses on hunting instead. The rules Ralph set begin to fade after Jack leads his hunters on a hunt and they allow the fire to die. Ralph blames Jack for letting the fire go out and this creates a rift between Jack and Ralph. The rift is deepened by fear of a beast which a “littlun” claims he saw. Eventually, Jack creates a new tribe of hunters after a falling-out with Ralph and takes most of the older boys with him. Jack’s tribe kills Piggy and captures the rest of Ralph’s tribe and sets out to hunt Ralph. While on the hunt, they set a forest fire to lure Ralph out and the fire attracted a passing Naval ship that takes all of the boys off of the island.…

I learned back on the island that when you want something, you must take it for yourself. Tolerating Ralph and his incapabilities as leader brought me nothing on the island. Only once I took his followers for my own did I truly realize the perks of holding power. Now I have another chance to take, and I will not waste it.…

Okay, everything is clearer now. There is a bunch of us kids stuck on an island without any parents. It seems like it will be fun, I'm a little scared, but I think it'll be fine. The leader is the older boy with the shell, his name is Ralph. The other boy's name is Piggy! Everyone laughed when we heard that. It was very funny. There was also a boy's choir. Their leader is an older boy named Jack. He's a funny boy; he is very serious about his hunting and what not. I think he wanted to be leader, but we all liked the shell boy more. I am more relaxed now, not too scared.…
