Devil’s Tower
Devils Tower National Monument, America’s first national monument is located in the Black Hills side of Crook County Wyoming and is home to the world famous rock formation that is raised high above the Ponderosa Pine Forest. The rock formation is a sacred part of the Native American tribes that live in the area. Native American tribes such as the Kiowa and Sioux speak of similar tales that surround the tower. Devils Tower can measure from its base more than four football fields tall. The park’s vast forest, meadows, wildflowers and sedges provide food and habitat for all types of animals, as well as, a shelter for amphibians and birds.

The film’s main plot strongly featured its focus around Devils Tower and therefore bringing the great formation back to life. In 2007 the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the national film registry selected the movie as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Close Encounters of the Third Kind was voted as America’s 64th greatest movie of all time.
Today Devils Tower is a beautiful monument as well as a park. Thousands of people visit the park and use it as a summer gathering where they light campfires and explore the land. Many people attempt to climb the tower as no guide is required. However, you must register at the ranger station before climbing. Each year in the month of June a voluntary rock climbing closure takes effect due to its religious significance to Native American
