Essay On Career Exploration
Whenever I was asked what I wanted to do for a career, I never really knew how to answer. There is the strong possibility that I will end up sitting in an office building, grinding away on health care related affairs like my dad; I would not mind that. Maybe I'll shoot for a job at NASA or SpaceX, leading a development program for a new satellite or mission. That is where my heart is currently settled, but as a student just beginning the journey of higher education and subject exploration, my aspirations are ever-evolving. My uncertainty has led to an investigation into new careers and opportunities that are of interest to me. This summer I have taken part in a variety of activities, and while most of them were not career orientated, they were important experiences that, frankly, are unusual of a 19 year old to have under their belt. I scuba-dived in Maui, bungee jumped in Las Vegas, mountain biked in Montana, and spent the rest of the time working at a Marina in St. Micheal's, Maryland. Yet, of all these exotic and fun adventures I had this summer, nothing could compare to, or prepare me for, the week I spent with a cardiovascular and …show more content…

I had never witnessed anything surgically related before; not even a simple tonsil removal, let alone open heart surgery. I continue to engage in medical experiences with my most memorable being, a six-week intense summer program offered by the University of Miami's School of Medicine, which aims to provide a mini medical school experience. We were taught several courses by medical school professors, including Anatomy & Physiology lab where we studied a human cadaver. As well, I shadowed doctors in departments such as Neurology and Trauma, where I observed my first surgery. This experience exposed me to the patience and detail of practicing medicine and interconnectedness…

Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a large imagination, filling up my days dreaming up endless scenarios of the future. Thinking of possible careers was never a problem, but choosing out of the many life paths I wanted was. I alternated between wedding planner, creating a notebook filled with torn out pages of poofy dresses and possible wedding locations; author, stuffing short stories and poems into a floral folder; and psychiatrist, researching the process to become a doctor. The thought that these may not be options for me never crossed my mind. I only knew I would do whatever I could to live out the future I saw in my mind.…

Spending time in clinicals with this woman in particular, helping her with her daily routine as well as getting to know her on a personal level developed a bond I will never forget. This woman, 96 years young, was full of wisdom and didn’t hesitate to share it all with me. Through this experience I learned what it meant to be a health care provider and truly care for the person I was helping, even when I had never met them before. I’ll never forget the last day of my clinical rotations as I stopped by for a final goodbye to each of the patients I had helped care for and their reactions. Everyone I had helped was more than grateful for my time spent with them, but Beatrice, my last stop before leaving Toledo hospital, broke into tears telling me how I was the hardest worker she had ever had and how much she would miss our time together. It was that moment that I realized this is want I needed to do with my life and that making a difference in someone’s life through healthcare would be the ultimate high.…

All children are required to graduate high school, but pursuing higher education is only recommended. While high school curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education, students learn essential career readiness skills while enrolling in higher education classes. Since students are not obliged to pursue higher education, many students who decide not to continue their education lack the skills necessary for future careers. While some schools hope to implement career readiness for either all their students or for only the students who do not wish to pursue college, other schools do not want to offer career readiness programs as they believe that it offers incentives for students not to attend college. Schools should require all students to take career readiness classes as…

On my way, all of my workout imposed body pain alleviates as my muscles relax. I then enter into the Hospital and as I walk toward the ER I am filled with a void of unhappiness. I witness rows of patients on stretchers lining the hospital hallways. I see excruciating pain on each patient’s face, posture, and helpless stare’s as they watch me walk by. Many of these patients feel trapped sitting in their wheelchairs, unable to live a free life. This make me think that it is just unfair that I am able to workout while these patients around me can barely move. My compassion creates an instinctive drive in me to help these people in relieving their physical agony. I ask them if they need water, warm blankets, or just someone to talk to. As a volunteer, I can only offer these patients a mental support system of care. I truly want to help them like the doctors in the hospital. Therefore, every week my aspiration of becoming a doctor grows stronger.…
