Essay On Candide
I did fairly enjoy reading this week about Voltaire’s Candide, or Optimism. I could vividly picture what was happening with all of the twists and turns involved in the story. It was not until that I looked at the video the professor had about this reading that it was a spoof. It remained me of the spoof movies of Scary Movie with Wayans brothers. This story was just fair to crazy for it to be real and the character were naïve but I did enjoy the journey by all of the characters.
First in the story where they talked about the Baroness, who weighted in the neighborhood of three hundred and fifty pound, was greatly respected (p. 355). During this time it was a sign of wealthy to weigh this much but in 2017 that would be considered obese or unhealthy.

Cunegonde would escape along with her brother which that you would think she had it bad until you hear the story of the old woman. Also, I thought Candide was a punk and he had no heart until he found out what was going on with Cunegonde. Candide would become a savage that would kill the grand inquisitor and a Jew. This act showed me the growth of his character also cognitively he was still trying to figure out is if this would be what the great Pangloss would do. They would flee to Bueno Aires where she would marry the governor and Candide had no say so because of the people he killed.
The next little subplot I enjoyed was with Cacambo and Candide with how he also had Candide’s back. They would in a territory where they would find Cunegonde’s brother, the baron, who would still have this hate for him. I do not know why he would tell him that he still wanted to marry his sister. It was liked he was looking for approval but with all he went through in his journey to me he did not need it. The baron said he still was not worthy of his sister and that pissed off Candide impales him with his

Goethe’s Faust and Voltaire’s Candide were two of the most interesting books that I have ever read! Both comedies were very different from each other in many ways. The structure of both books varied significantly. I enjoyed Candide more than Faust partially due to the structure. I found that because Faust almost entirely rhymed that it was harder to follow. It was very distracting to me and I felt as if the rhyming took away from the story. Candide was told more like a story and I found it easier to follow because of this.…

The individual who I decided to research is now well known for her job hosting the Biggest Loser, Hayley Lewis. At 15 years old Hayley Lewis had won 5 Gold medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She weighed 58kg and never thought anything about her weight at the time as she was fit, healthy and muscular. A magazine came out saying that she was “a fit 15 year old but a bit heavy legged.” From then on she started to get bigger and bigger. A year later her weight had crept up to 65kg and by the 1992 Barcelona Olympics she weighed 73kg.…

I really enjoyed both readings, but I would have to lean towards Voltaire’s Candide more. I really enjoyed the story and the humor. It got me thinking about our world today. There are still many similarities today that I felt relatable to Candide’s journey (which was written in 1759.) Also I think the writing had much to do with me liking Candide more. Behn’s style of writing, at times, had me struggling to understand what was being said.…

Always a good 118 pounds. The next time she gained a few pounds, she thought it was the same, but she was wrong, it wasn’t. She did everything she could to lose those few pounds but the number only grew. Her personality changed, she became embarrassed to even go anywhere, or even go out with her boyfriend. Got paranoid that the more she gained weight the more one of her old closet friends started flirting with her boyfriend. On pg.70 of the book it says “I stare at my dinner plate. One half piece of bread, one half cup of fat free cottage cheese. A colorful medley raw vegetables. One small orange.”…

Research indicates that there is a positive correlation between consumption of high fructose corn syrup and obesity percentages. Sucrose is the leading added sweetener in in the manufacture of foods in the Unites States and is the biggest source of fructose. Sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are metabolized identically and react the same way to insulin, leptin and ghrelin. Sucrose is indifferent from HFCS in causing obesity. Compared to glucose, sucrose is extracted directly from the liver while glucose goes directly to the bloodstream causing larger sugar spikes. HFCS and sucrose have an identical effect on glucose and hormones such as insulin. Sucrose=50% glucose + 50% fructose; HFCS = . 55% fructose + 45% glucose. Excessive amount of fructose intake as added sugar…

It was interesting how Frances explained that fads were common during times of instability, uncertainty, and change. I agree when he suggested that the more we know about the fads in the past, the less likely we are to mindlessly repeat them in the future(p??). One thing that I enjoyed reading was how demonic possessions were a…

I can very much relate to this event. For example, there are times when things that happen don’t allow me to accept myself. Also, because of my low self-esteem, I can’t always laugh at the mistakes I make. However, there is always someone that can lift my spirits up and tell me that it’s okay to be different. In my case, the people that motivate me are my mom and dad. In Charles’ case, it’s Will.…

Also something to consider when reading this article is the definitions of overweight and obese. These words are used interchangeably in our country and most people don’t have a clear understanding of their differences. While they both refer to excess weight in humans, overweight simply means a condition where the person weighs over his normal weight according to his height, age and sex, and a BMI number between 25 and 29.9. Someone who is obese suffers from a bodily condition marked by excessive generalized deposition and storage of fat, with a BMI number above 30.…

An unusual conception of a monument built on and around a partly artificial hill, Candi Borobudur was constructed during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty, in the Central Javanese period of Indo-Javanese history, between 650 and 930 A.D. (A.J. Bernet Kempers, Ageless Borobudur, 20) The monument stands in the Kedu Valley between the twin volcanoes – Mt. Sundoro and Mt. Sumbing to the west, and Mt. Merabu and Mt. Merapi to the east – at the confluence of River Progo and Elo. Indubitably, the choice of situating Borobudur in the proximity of these intersections was “to evoke the most sacred confluence of all… to seek a replica of holy places”. (Jacques Dumarcay, Borobudur, 21-22) Also, for a monument of such massive scale, abundant…
