Stereotypes are a widely held but fixed or oversimplified image or idea of a particular group of people or thing. With “only 3.8 percent of all television or theatrical roles were portrayed by Asian Pacific Islander actors in 2008” ,but still face some of the most brutal stereotypes. These stereotypes being broadcasted on shows ranging from Power Rangers, Glee , and Law and Order: SVU. Being seen by all age demographics and different types of people. These stereotypes being that all Asians are Chinese, that they can all do martial arts, that all Asians are smart, and are prostitutes. This stereotype stems from when the U.S. sent troops to Vietnam in the 1960-70’s and the notion that Vietnamese woman just throw themselves at american soldiers. As pointed out above Hollywood still uses tired and racist stereotypes to portray Asian actors in films. Withe it be by them being categorizing them as martial arts experts , all being highly intelligent, or as prostitutes. More so , However, Hollywood would rather focus on these stereotypes them the individual person and the beauty of the Asian culture. It unfair that the few roles Asian are given in television that they are forced to play these stereotypes instead of their true selves. This is something that must change and, has to go in
