People usually gather their family and friends to celebrate the Singapore’s birthday. I think that they will be dressed in red or white and be so enthusiastic to celebrate it. Some of them will be heading to the marina bay or the Padang depending on the government choice, or they would be staying at home watching the national day celebration, eating their dinner or just some junk food. Singapore has been progressing very fast, as I can see it, if I can remember. But I think the people who go to watch it is just there for the goodie bag.

For me, I don’t really celebrate national day because mostly every year is the same thing again. But this time it was weird for me because I don’t get the message their passing through the performance. They made the Merlion jump into the Singapore River, which is filled with corals and fishes, he said he was afraid of the water. I only get to catch that part of the whole performance because I was having dinner with my parents. For the rest of the time, I was playing game with my friends online; they are all like me, not interested in the NDP celebration. But during primary 5, I had the chance to go to the national day celebrations, like the rest of the other primary school students. I only chose to go because my teacher told us that we had to do a project regarding the celebrations. It was quite boring actually. The only part I liked is the fireworks live in action. The experience watching fireworks behind the television and live at scene was a whole lot different.

Singapore has been through a lot of hardships during those days like the Japanese occupation and the SARS outbreak. If without Lee Kuan Yew, I think that we would be living in a third world country, if Lee Kuan Yew did not have the foresight and the mind to guide it.

In conclusion, no matter what happens to Singapore , I will defend it with my

Once a small fishing village with almost no natural resources, Singapore has flourished into a point of pride for the world. As Nicolas Berggruen, a famous French investor and philanthropist said, “Singapore was created out of the swamp, with a strong emotional idea: a safe place mostly for Chinese, but accepting other cultures and other races.” Singapore had been at a disadvantage for most of its early age, until the achievement of its first world status towards the end of the 20th century. Much of this success can be attributed to the first prime minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Malcolm Gladwell in David and Goliath emphasizes the results when ordinary people confront giants and categorizes giants as, “powerful opponents of all kinds – from armies and mighty warriors to disability, misfortune, and oppression.” Singapore overcame such odds through the right decisions made by a key leader of this city-state through strong legislation, stringent laws and a favorable geographical location. Based on Singapore’s success, I agree with Gladwell that underdogs can use unconventional methods such as turning disadvantages into advantages. Economists might argue that Singapore’s GDP is lower than most leading countries which I agree with. However, when taking into account GDP per capita, Singapore ranks as one of the world’s most successful countries, proving its ability to turn its disadvantages into advantages. This is important because countries in Asia benchmark themselves against Singapore to judge how well they do, which in turn affects the rest of the world economically. They can also learn from Singapore as an example.…

In Asia, New Year’s Day is a family holiday. After a whole busy year, working and travelling, this is time for people to come home, back to their families. To welcome the coming year, people clean and decorate their houses. All members in a family work together and get the job done. For example, in my family, my mother takes care of the cooking, my father cleans the house and I decorate it. We spend time doing our job, and helping the others. This always makes me happy. My parents are usually busy so they don’t have much time to spend with me. New Year is a rare occasion for us to be with each other and relax.…
