Working For Yourself

As I walk into the house of Mrs. Leticia Clanton I smelled mangos. She lead me into her kitchen where her oldest daughter set eating an hotdog. Mrs. Leticia offered me one of those delicious hotdogs, as she stood there in her blue jeans pants, and red, orange ,and pink flower shirt. While we were eating lunch Mrs. Leticia was making dinner for her family. Red beans and rice with a pan of cornbread spread through out the kitchen. Right off the back I knew she was a family woman by the way she had lunch, and dinner already prepared for her family.
The smell of mangos filled Mrs. Leticia house from the front room to the back of the house where the laundry room is located. The smell was so inviting that I knew doing our interview I was going to ask where does she get that mango fragrant from; I made sure she knew I smelled it by saying “ your house smells really good.” just the smell of the house made me know that she has recently cleaned her house. Spot-less and neat with a smell of mango made me believe she was good at her job cleaning other people homes and businesses.

Mrs. Leticia is an entrepreneur. Spiffy is the name of her cleaning company that she owned for over ten years. Over the years only her family and close friends worked for her doing those years. When I asked the question do she want her business to expands beyond the basic area of New Orleans, and Baton Rouge Louisiana she responded by saying “ yes, because if that where the money that’s where she want to be.” I mention earlier she only had her family and close friends work for her. I asked the question about others applying for work with her and the response was “ If I had more jobs then I would love to hire other to work for me.” “So in the near future be looking for spiffy to be more develop and worldwide” Mrs. Leticia said after telling me about how big she wanted her company to expand.

Johnny was sitting at the kitchen table watching his mother Anita, cleaning the dishes. She was wearing her tired blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up, beat up denims, and her hair in a low pony-tail. Anita’s favorite thing was to do the dishes. She always sang to herself while her blue eyes traveled out the window through the woods. She would think things of leaving and starting over. She never wanted Johnny to see herself that way but he did. He saw her sadness. Many times she would stare at the little Eiffel Tower statue that was on the window sill or look at her and her husband, Jacks', wedding photo above the fireplace. The pictured showed a much younger, and happier Anita.…

In the winter I wear flannel night gowns to bed and overalls during the day. I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man” (744). This portrays the picture of a typical African-American Mother who is working tirelessly to keep up with her family and especially the kids regardless of what the man does; either he provides or goes away living his life. It also displays a domineering spirit of most African women in their families to rule and preserve the norms of their homes. Mama’s lack of education does not limit her from comprehending the importance of her cultural heritage; which can be seen from how she related to the quilt and her love and respect to preserve it and hand it down to someone she assumed would do the same (Maggie). In as much as Mama never approved some attitudes of Dee; she identified to her heritage. Most African immigrants in America are just like Mama; they are faced with a struggle to preserve their cultural heritage and pass it onto their US-born kids. Instead they finds Dee’s earlier attitude of denying her heritage showing up and their responds would be just like Mama “I didn’t want to bring up how I have offered Dee (Wangero) the quilt, when she went away to college. Then She had told me, they were old fashioned and out of style”…

Sarah always fixed her golden blonde hair in a style that I thought looked like a big, fat hamburger bun on the top of her head. She had piercing blue eyes, a sharp nose, and China doll perched lips. Her matronly figure was usually adorned in her work attire which was entirely white from her jacket, blouse, skirt, nylons, and even down to her orthopedic white shoes. She did, however, wear a pretty, pink laced handkerchief that rested on her left bosom. Sara worked at the local Morrison's Cafeteria as a server in the salad and fruit section of the food line. Even though Sarah resembled an angel in white, the glare that was in her eyes reminded me of the devil or she was probably like one of the women in the juvenile home that would stand over me with a big, thick stick to hit me if I didn't scrub the floors hard enough were I ever so unfortunate to end up in that…

Later, she tested hesitant remarks in our car rides home. She’d mention that she wouldn’t be fixing dinner for my dad that night because work had exhausted her, and I, precociously defiant of him, would laugh and reply, “Good! He needs to learn to cook, anyway.” A small curve of her lips in the review mirror agreed. Her defiance gained strength as her opinions developed a candidness: “I’m not cooking dinner tonight because I’ve had a long day. Dad needs to help around the house, too.” Still, she scrubbed his dishes after every meal while he remained in his chair like a king spectating his servants.…

A common occurrence in my life, I saw the occasions of uprooting my family’s life in one place to another as a splendid time. Thinking back on my childhood, my attention is drawn towards the happy memories of arriving at my new home in Florida. Stepping inside my new, still empty home, I could feel the chills going down my back; it was the feeling of a new beginning. The smell inside was foreign yet smelled like home. Lying down on the cool tile floor, my body felt relief from the heavy and humid air. I studied driveway outside the house, admiring the strategic layout of the brick, which would be the stepping-stones of my future friendships. There, inside my house, towered the cardboard boxes, waiting to be unpacked. I was thrilled to open the boxes, unsure of what surprise I would find inside. Although there was much to do, I was determined to make friends and I set out for the hunt. The neighborhood was a maze, filled with palm trees that grew tall and strong, their green palms calmly fluttering in the humid summer breeze. The houses were filled with people, my new neighbors, all living their lives as I explored,…
