The Enjoyment of Reading

The first time I became interested in reading books and novels was during my summer vacation last year while I was staying at Maple Bay. It was another simple and yet dull day when my mother suggested that I should try doing something new for a change. At first I thought it wasn't a good idea, but I decided to give it a try and do
Something new for a change. It was hard for me to figure out something I don't usually do. That's when it hit me I would try finding a book that I'd like to read. It isn't hard to find books in my house because I know we have plenty in my mom's office. When I began looking for a book I'd like to read I thought that if the book has an interesting title then I would like reading it. I soon found out though what people meant by the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" because they aren't as good as they sound. I didn't feel like trying to find another book, but I decided to anyways because I knew that this time when I chose a book I would pick the right for me. Soon after awhile I found a book that interested me. The name of that book was titled "Hatchet" by Gary Paulson. When I first started I thought it would take me days to finish reading this book since I didn't read that often. I was so intrigued by the book that I soon realized I was done with it the same day I chose to read it. Then that's when I found out that I really like to read and that I was an excellent reader as well. After I finished reading "Hatchet" I started reading more of Gary Paulson's novels and stories. Every time I finish a book I notice that my vocabulary and grammar skills have become far better than they had been before I began reading. Reading has opened a whole new world for me. I can really understand and picture what the authors are telling me and the meaning of their stories. If I never would have attempted to try something new and choosing

This is the story of when my interest in reading and writing arose. I believe it started around 10th grade in high school. I experienced so many new things. For instance, I was involved in the band. Which I consider helped my creativity. I found a book that truly interested me and actually had me hooked from beginning till end. Some things from this time didn’t always seem to pan out, but that’s something pretty common and we’ll discuss this at a later time in this. There were people who along this time who inspired my writing and introduced new books to me to enjoy thoroughly. At this time, I believe I’ll start by talking about the people who got me on track.…

My sophomore year, around April I started reading "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins. I only got somewhere around the 100th page and then stopped reading, because I was always busy with school work. we read a book in class called "Looking for Alaska", I truly enjoyed reading it, that is when I started slowly getting more interested in reading. When school ended for the summer, I had to take summer school, and for my English class I had to read a book and give a presentation over it. The book I chose to read was "The Story of My Life" By Helen Keller, before that I have not been able to finish a book I selected by my liking in almost two years.…

I don’t think I had 100% read a real book all by myself at this time, needless to say, this terrified me. The book I chose to read was the Maze Runner by James Dashner. As I began I was hesitant, but I quickly got into the book and finally understood the saying ‘I couldn’t put the book down’. It was action packed and filled with words I knew and understood. Reading this book gave me a new found confidence in reading and in myself that I had never experienced before. After the Maze Runner I began reading more and more. I started to enjoy reading, which is a stark difference from my former refusal…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

For the first time in my entire life I was understanding in a new level what was happening in the book. I was playing the scenes out in my head and actually enjoying the read. I feel my desire and interest in writing grew dim once I reached middle school and had to write about stories and novels I did not find interesting, causing me not to actively read these books in the first place. That feeling of being distant from the material covered in my middle school classes carried over into high school and it did not help that I had the same strict English teacher for all four years of high school. Mrs.…
