English Major Reflection

At Los Angeles Trade Tech College, where the majority of the educational-programs revolve around career-tech education, academic programs almost always take a back seat. As a result of this neglect, few to no English majors have graduated from LATTC in the last few years. After coming across this mortifying information, I knew something had to be done.
I revived the Literature Club at Trade Tech to create a platform to promote English and writing in forms that were digestible to people who weren’t English majors, and reach out to my community and the school to painstakingly lay out to them that literature and writing matters and an appreciation for it should exists not only at school, but in our community.
There is a stigmatic mindset that surrounds the English Major. I have witnessed firsthand many minority students justifying not pursuing an English Major because of the notion, which is often perpetuated in our society that minorities do not write or speak well.
As the president of the Literature Club, I am changing people's attitudes towards the process of reading and writing while cultivating a community of readers and writers on campus. Through the Lit Club, I am able to guide students through the many different genres and styles of literature. We analyze other forms of literature like movie scripts, music lyrics, and comic books to promote the diversity of literature. Through events like book drives, and poetry slams, I reach out to people, who are not English majors, and watch as reading and writing enriches their
