The Empire State Building was made during the Great Depression, during this time people did not have the money to rent office space so the building was nicknamed the “Empty State Building”. The building's forever in style art deco spire was originally designed to be a depot for dirigible airships; the 102nd floor was supposed to be the landing platform. On the 86th floor would have been the observation deck and once you would check in there you would take an elevator that travels between the 86th and 102nd floors was supposed to transport passengers; the idea proved to be impractical and dangerous after a few attempts with airships, due to the powerful winds caused by the size of the building itself. The T-shaped mooring devices remain in place, and a large broadcasting antenna was added to the top of the spire in 1952. July 28, 1945 at 9:45am, a B-25 Mitchell bomber flying in a thick fog accidentally crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building. The National Catholic Welfare Council were on the 79th and 80th floors where the plane hit. One of the engine went right through the building and another plummeted down an elevator shaft. The fire was extinguished in a mere 40 minutes and 14 people were killed. The elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver survived a 75 storied fall inside an elevator and is the guinness book of world records longest fall to date.

The Empire State Building offers amazing views of the New York City from its 86th and 102nd floor observatories. In 2007 through 2011 and for the nine months in 2012, the number of visitors was approximately 4.03 million. 8-10 percent of all domestic and international tourists coming to New York end up going on a tour to The Empire State Building. The cost of admissions to the observatory is $19.61. The Empire State Building generated around $68.5 million and $80.6 million in revenue from its observatory in the nine months between December 31, 2011 and September 30, 2012. Which is approximately 40.1% and 40.5% of the Empire State Building’s revenue. The observatory has demonstrated a strong performance even though the competitive pressures as total revenue and operating income increased by over 25.0% in 2005 and over 11.0% in 2006, despite the opening of the Top of the Rock observation deck at Rockefeller Center in November
