Transformations often involve using the same storyline of a text and changing its context in order to suit the environment, culture or society. In terms of highlighting the themes in a transformed text, it also indicates that the issues that were apparent in the past are still relevant to the current society. The director of the film “Clueless”, Amy Heckerling, has accomplished this through convenient transformation of Jane Austen’s novel “Emma”. Heckerling has supported Austen’s novel in a positive way, however has altered the values seen in Austen’s period to fit modern audiences. The themes of “Clueless” show the context of “Emma” in a contemporary period, converting the text to a well-known high school society in Beverly Hills. Amy Heckerling’s production of “Clueless” presented in 1995 expresses the typical parallels between features, characters and values of the novel “Emma”. In relation to the re-plotting of the text, Heckerling successfully substitutes the values regarding social class, manners, formal conversation and importance of self-image of the novel “Emma”, into another world of social…

¨Oh yeah, I love that speech! It has such a profound meaning. ” These words aren't often spoken, but when they are, the person saying it, without a doubt, means it. What makes a speech so memorable? Is it possible to find similarities between two completely different speeches, such as; Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” and Emma Watson’s “Gender Equality is your issue, too” speech? A speech is a formal address or discourse delivered to an audience; however, it may seem to be a jumble of words spoken out loud, if it is not potent and meaningful. The use of rhetorical devices, persuasive techniques, and rhetoric appeals makes a speech memorable because they trigger emotions and engross the audience into each and every word. Abraham Lincoln’s…

Ideas about the human condition can transcend time and expressed through different contexts while reflecting society’s changing values. Emma, written by Jane Austen reaffirms and challenges the conservative society of 19th century England, where moral growth is a result of strict social etiquettes and rigid class structure. However, Heckerling has taken similar ideas that speak powerfully about human nature to the different context of 20th century America, within the world of Clueless where a much fluid social structure is orientated around popularity and superficial materialism. While both texts are able to mirror the values and beliefs of its time, they convey similar ideas which are universal and relate to any context.…
