Joseph Merrick- The Elephant Man The movie The Elephant Man highlighted many different aspects of the human nature; people who interacted with the Elephant man each had different responses to him. Joseph Merrick also known as the elephant man was a heavily disfigured man, who throughout his life comes into contact with many different individuals. Joseph spent most of his life being mistreated by the people who he came into contact with. The only person that treated Joseph like a human bean was Dr Treves, from the eyes of counselors the doctor was the best thing to happen to Joseph. The movie The Elephant Man touched my heart because it showed me that in this world there are many different people. Joseph came into contact with people who were negative and positive to his life. In the movie the way people view Joseph was hurtful some were afraid of him, other just couldn’t believe that he was human or could ever living normally. When he was with bytes I felt as if that was him being in hell. Then when the doctor was introduce in the movie I was confused because I wasn’t sure if he wanted to meet Joseph for all the right reasons but after see that he was trying to help him. I felt a little happier about Joseph condition because he didn’t do anything to deserve what he was going through. After I learned that Joseph lived by the bible it made me understand a little more of what his mind set is like. From a counselor’s point of view, Joseph was a very troubled and hurt individual. All the obstacles that were in his life would have affecting him to the point at which he would hate people and feel as if he was lower on the human scale. For example when he had to deal with Bytes as his partner, bytes would treat him as if he was an animal. To be treated like that would make any human feel lesser about themselves, also taking in constant that Joseph was a very smart person who was subduing his intelligence in order to find a place in

As Martin Buber once said, “an animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language”. As the years go by, numerous animals are becoming extinct by man’s lack of compassion. They used to roam freely, without fear, in the wild, although; with rising population, the wilderness is no longer their home. Therefore, the animals are forced to share their land with uncompassionate humans. One example is the Borneo Pygmy Elephant found in Southeast Asia. Their thriving population has diminished to less than 1,500 in the past years. An analysis of the endangered Borneo Pygmy Elephant shows their characteristics and habitat, what is threatening them, and how they can be saved.…

Joseph Simmons is a simple man and is both a major and minor character in this book. He is very close knit with Adam’s family and is good friends with Moses Cooper. Adam states, “He was a blacksmith and had shares in a slaver” (Fast 32). The Coopers, at the beginning of the book, also consider Joseph to be a simple minded, heavyset man with high morals. Adam shows this by saying, “The ship the Simmons brothers invested in came in and made them rich, but Joseph broke with them and remained a blacksmith” (Fast 33). Joseph did not want to become wealthy in that way, so he remained hard working because of his high morals.…

The movie was very powerful just to learn about hate crime and how it attracted a lot of attention from media as well as public all over the world due to his tragic death. Matthew was the type of person that was very approachable and always put his family and friends first. Even though the death of Matthew Shepard was undeserved I definitely think that some good has come out of it because it made people realize how much violence and hatred there in the world and what it can turn into. This tragedy helped the nation wake up to the fact that hate and discrimination still lives in our communities, schools and families. Mr. Dennis Shepard gave speech in tribute to his son Matthew brought tears in my eyes. I was able to connect and engage to that moment. That moment touched me so much that I couldn’t stop crying.…

He once sat down with Darren Dortch to talk about when you ever feel sad read a book, and one the quotes he quoted a book from Joel Osteen a Christian author “Encouragement to others is something everyone can give. Somebody needs what you have to give. It may not be your money; it may be your time. It may be your listening ear. It may be your arms to encourage. It may be your smile to uplift. Who knows? Joel Osteen.” That quote he uses to become successful he uses that so that he won’t forget about the past but the present. An Elephantine Analysis In Charles Siebert's article The Elephant Crackup, the author employs a nuanced and compelling rhetorical strategy that seamlessly integrates firsthand narratives, expert opinions, and emotional appeals to shed light on the profound consequences of human exploitation on elephants. Through the deliberate use of linguistic choices, comparisons to human tragedies, and a careful balance of ethos, pathos, and logos, Siebert effectively engages the reader, emphasising the urgent need for compassionate rehabilitation practices and fostering a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between human actions and elephant behaviour. Charles Siebert establishes his credibility as a firsthand narration (Kairos) using an anecdote,…

The character the really interests me the most would be of course the Elephant Man. I’m just as curious as Dr.Treves is on why he looks the way he does. for example did his condition got worse in age or if it was always bad. Although on a much more deeper level I have so much curiosity for his personality. All his life he has been judged, laughed at, beaten and had people scream in his face as if he was a monster but he still managed to tell Dr. Treves that every minute of every day he was always happy. He had a huge impact on me because if he can go on living everyday and be happy even under all the depressing circumstances then theres no reason why anyone else can’t. He could have gave up but he instead he looked at the better things in life and was always hopeful. While watching the movie he even gave me hope as…

Although a representative of British power, the narrator sympathizes with the oppressed natives and their country but is forced to act according to imperial aims. When the narrator receives a call, he is commissioned to bring a runaway elephant under control. In order to defend himself in the case of an attack, he takes a rifle, which makes the natives think that the elephant is going to be shot. When the narrator arrives, he finds a peaceful elephant eating, which offers no danger. He feels as if he should not shoot, but there is the mass of natives, or as he calls “yellow faces” behind him that demand the police officer shoot the elephant. After an inner struggle, the narrator finally gives in to the power of the natives’ demanding and shoots. He has to fire several shots for the animal to die painfully. The officer cannot stand the sight and leaves while the natives have already started tearing the elephant apart. “The crowd would laugh at me. And my whole life, every white man's life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at”. He admits that shooting the elephant was necessary as a means of demonstrating the power and ensure British…

The protagonist and narrator of "Shooting an Elephant" made a decision that many would consider unjust. He shot and killed and elephant. Looking from the outside in, it would look as if he was a terrible person from what he did, for a vast amount of people consider the act wrong morally. Although, one must take in his intentions of the act too. He never wanted, nor planned, to kill the elephant. The Burmese people rooting him on seemed irrefutable, and he felt as if he was doing what they wanted him to. That contradicts the idea that the narrator of this story was a monstrous person because he shot an elephant.…

His natural mother died when he was 3 and because of it his father couldn’t cope with his mother’s death and fled to Canada. So Joe went to live with his aunt in Pennsylvania upstairs in the attic of her old house. He didn’t much care for his aunt and never constructed a bond with her while he stayed there. Then a little over a year later Joe’s brother Fred called Joe and asked if Joe would like to move back to Oregon with his father who had recently moved back from Canada and married a woman named Thula. It was a beautiful home that Joe could appreciate. One short month later it was taken from him, it was engulfed in flames. Then they moved to Idaho where Harry (Joe’s dad) worked in a mine. Thula now had three kids of her own and little Joe. She felt that Joe was not her son so she didn’t have to take care of him. This was when she stopped feeding him. As you can see Joe never stayed in one place for long. Not long enough to form a bond with anyone. Joe never put trust in anyone except maybe his father who ran away from him at a very young age. When Joe got left on his own when he was 15 during the great depression, he vowed that he would never trust anyone ever for the rest of his life. Too many times he had found something amazing and had it taken away from him. Whether it was hobbies,…

Uncle Joseph couldn’t speak for a while, but that did not stop him from supporting and caring for his family and community. I think the way Edwidge told her story about her life was very expressing. She described all the events so good, that I could picture it in my head. Through her words, I felt that Uncle Joseph was a strong man that did not let anything bring him down. He stood up for what he believed. He always managed to help other people. For example he took care of his niece and nephew for more than ten years. Even after having his struggles with the American forces, the Bel Air gangs and being detained by the U.S. Customs, he still remained strong and did not give up. I believe that through her writing, Edwidge did keep her Uncle Josephs identity and dignity. She described her uncle and his actions in a very unique way. She made it seem like the readers were part of the book. I felt like I knew who Uncle Joseph was by the way she described him and his actions. Uncle Joseph’s image stayed alive with Danticats words and phrases. He was a strong Haitian man, that even throat cancer couldn’t stop him from helping others. He couldn’t take “No” as answer; he would always do whatever he could t...…
