The first problem that puts Haiti in the position of natural disaster is it's location. The second problem that causes catastrophe in Haiti is the haphazard construction of buildings. The last issue Haiti has with natural disasters is lack of wealth which makes repairment difficult for the country. Leonard Pitts repeats in his article, “Sometimes, the earth is cruel. And always, when it is, we do the same thing. We dig ourselves out. We weep and mourn, we recover and memorialize the dead, we rebuild our…

Because of Haiti’s rough economic start as a free nation and foreign and internal factors, Haiti was not properly set up to industrialize and be able to join a competitive free market without damage being done to the local industries that support Haiti. Before Haiti became a free, independent nation, it was sugar and coffee producing powerhouse owned by the French that relied on slave labor. By period of the French Revolution, plantations in Haiti produced more than half of all the coffee produced around the world and 40% of the sugar for France and Britain, making it a profitable colony for France. Also during this time, the population of slaves in Haiti was between 500 and 700 thousand, heavily outnumbering whites and freed blacks. Due to…
President Obama promised that Haiti would have the “unwavering support” of the United States. Mr. Obama said that the United States aid agencies were moving swiftly to get help to Haiti and that search-and-rescue teams were en route. He described the reports of destruction as “truly heart-wrenching,” made more cruel given Haiti’s long-troubled circumstances. “This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share,” Mr. Obama said. (Romero, 2010).…

The concepts of equality and liberty drove revolutionaries to expel their colonial overlords to abolish slavery and create an equal and just society. The idea of equality appealed to lower class Americans such as mestizos, mulattoes and natives, but especially inspired black slaves. Lower class Americans believed a revolution would move them up in society to the level of creoles while slaves saw revolutions as a way to gain freedom. Haiti’s declaration of independence in 1904, showed slaves’ motivations by stating that they would rather die than be forced back into in slavery and that they must create a government that protects the Haitians’ freedom. As former slaves, the Haitians were extremely worried the French would try to invade them again, as Napoleon had tried to do to fund his wars in Europe. Thus,…

On January 12, 2012, the country of Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that changed the lives of people living across the nation. The earthquake struck Haiti before 5pm and was centered about 10 miles South East of Port-au-Prince, which is the capital city of Haiti. This earthquake is known as one of the most powerful earthquakes of the century that hit the Eastern parts of Cuba. Prior to the earthquake Haiti acquired the lowest immunization rates in the world (55%) and disease was very common, as well as extreme poverty, political unrest and weak infrastructure (Hinman, “Cholera Vaccination in Haiti; Evidence, Ethel, Expedience”). In results of the earthquake in Haiti, Haiti has been left in a poorer economic condition than before. Due to this natural disaster, many innocent lives were taken away. The number of casualties kept increasing as the bodies of children were being discovered under the destroyed rumble. People all over the world watched a tragedy unfold and…
It is almost impossible to get a good education in Haiti. For the poorest children it is very difficult to get any education at all. Only about half of Haiti’s children ever attend school. Most who do never graduate from primary school; and only 38 of every thousand students complete high school. Grade levels are not broken down by age, but rather by the quality of work that students are able to do. Children tend to be more dependent, conforming, and willing to place family welfare over individual wishes.…
To conclude, United States and Haiti have two different ways of raising children, two different lifestyles, but alike in religions. Even though Haitian parents are poor, they raise good kids. Haitian kids do everything to protect their dignities. United States has a lot of work to do to improve the way of raising kids. American children need to be more respectful. In a society respect is very important. Children should be taught well. In this case they will behave every day in…
In 2010 Haiti suffered from a 7.0 magnitude, leaving 2 million people homeless. After this tragedy Haiti received a great amount of personnel and foreign aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Health Organization (WHO), and citizens all over the world. Six years later, there are still hundreds of tent camps filled with people, and thousands of people are still outside the half built, half destroyed, Port-au-Prince palace. The people live in front of the nation's capital are jobless and helpless, there is no clean water besides the water NGOs are bringing in, no electricity, and they rely on the NGOs bringing them their next meals. Haiti is still suffering from the natural disaster that happened six years ago, but a lot more more should have been done.…
It seems that health insurance is almost nonexistent in Haiti, with the population being so poor it is likely that the majority just cant afford insurance. Well over half of Haiti is unemployed and with employers being poor them selves health insurance just is not a resource that seems attainable. That is why it is so important for organizations to come together and build jobs witch will in turn build the economy and make health insurance attainable to the citizens. While providing aid to Haiti is very much needed, Haiti also needs resources and access to knowledge to help them build jobs. Most Haitians are very ready to learn and work on building their community. It is vital that this country be taught and given the resources to rebuild. They are also in need of people willing to invest in building.…
