Education and Student Council
Unite!
The Students Council is a group of people who gets elected every year by students and help the school improve different things. Through the student council, it helps students to communicate more effectively with the school.

The debate was held on October 1st and the voting was held on October 3rd.

Elected Charlene Jin and William Chen from 11A and 11C this year, they seem very aggressive in helping the school.

“Our main objective is integration and unity. We want to bring students closer together, while giving power to our scattered wills by harnessing them into a unified spirit,” Charlene pointed out.

Uniting the students’ spirit may be hard for the student council, but Charlene seems very eager in trying their best to achieve what they promised during the campaign speech.

Charlene revealed, “I think that unity is the first step to any future improvements – it is hard to progress when people are unable to meet consensus, or when they simply don’t care; We want to install a stronger sense of belonging, a sense of community.”

At the campaign speech, they stated some new, interesting things that attracted the attention of voters.

“Therefore, we will put the greater part of the term’s effort into the set up of a house system, along with surrounding policies and activities,” Charlene added.

The students have been criticizing the food in Kang Chiao for some time. Therefore, they are also some promises about the student council about the improvement of food in their speech.

“Well, our goals are to improve the school food and the quality of the school uniform, but it may be hard,” William stated.

Besides giving some vague promises, they also mentioned some interesting episodes that happened before the debate.

“At first, we were thinking that we wanted to do something fun to start of the campaign speech. So, a few people said that they’re going to put William Chen on a cart and break through the door, and they actually did

Bill Clinton started off the speech with great enthusiasm and referred to a story that touched me emotionally. He also used an analogy that got me pumped for America’s future which drew in my attention. During the speech he spoke with great vocal variety, he raised his tone when he said, “I proudly here to nominate Barrack Obama to be the leader of the Democratic Party”, emphasizing his reason for speaking at the convention. When talking about the great recession and how it affected the American people, Clinton lowered his tones and spoke with sadness by showing a frowning face. He then brought the audience back into mood by raising his tone and stating statistics that we are better off than we were four years ago. He also looked up, smiled, and said it with confidence which I feel that gave the audience hope.…

Which is why if I am elected as your Student Council President, I will strive to make it so that all students are treated equally and with the respect that they deserve. I will place more importance on events like Respect Week so that more people realize how essential it is to treat others how you would want to be treated, how essential it is to respect others. I will work to lessen discrimination, if not eliminate it, in this school, so that this becomes one area that the Black Lives Matter movement does not need to worry…

Being on student council has taught me how to be an effective leader. Student council is the under belly of work, the leadership skills that cannot be taught, but must be learned through experience. Being Vice President of student council has taught me many things and transformed me into a stronger leader. The best thing it has taught me is how to be ambitious in what I believe in. It has taught me to take action on whatever I set my mind to. The leadership skills that I acquired while running meetings have been very beneficial. It has taught me organizational skills when planning events, and also social skills when speaking with staff and peers. I have learned how to work with a budget. I have learned publicity skills when making posters and banners to encourage the student body to come to events. I have learned how to make the hardest or simplest decisions that will be the most beneficial for everyone. It has taught me how to put others first, and how to represent myself in a respectful manner to others. In my opinion, these are the qualities a leader should have. The goal of student council is to express themselves in the group so as to be effective. A leader cannot achieve alone. As part of a group, we open our ears and envision possibilities to improve Buffalo Grove High School. In order for any group to succeed and attain their goals, it needs cooperation and teamwork. I’ve learned that teamwork is probably the most effective element in achieving a team’s goal. During Student Council meetings, if ideas are circulating within the group, it will be easier to improve and come up with an even better one. I believe that by serving my student body on student council I have gained many of the important qualities that it takes to be a leader. My definition of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and lead by example. Next year, I intend on running for student council President. I am going to work diligently…

Throughout 2017, Joey has met with President Ronald Cantor about the Chapters activities and plans for the past Fall Semester. By talking with the president, we were about to speak about our College Project at the Faculty Convocation. This created a stronger working relationship with the faculty members because their input was essential for our project to work. Before he was President, he was Vice President of Scholarship and oversaw a large portion of our Honor and Actions Project last year. He has contributed to the Southern Maine Community College outside the Chapter as well. He served as Vice President of the Business club until the Fall of 2017 and then voted as Secretary due to his responsibilities as Alpha Chi Nu's President. In the Business Club, he helped to plan the OREO (Obstacle Race for Each Other) Race Fundraiser, which was an obstacle fun run race in November 2017. He helped to raise $750.00 that went to the hurricane relief in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. He also volunteered to help Habitat for Humanity to help build the Ronald McDonald House in Scarborough. In 2016-2017, he was an English tutor for students on the SMCC campus. Each week, he would spend numerous hours in the Campus Center assisting students to better themselves in their English classes.
