Ebenezer Scrooge In Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol
Charles Dickens book A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite books that I always read around Christmas. The main character of this book is Ebenezer Scrooge. He is a very mean old man who doesn’t like Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Mr. Scrooge is visited by a ghost named Jacob Marley who happens to be his old partner. Because Jacob Marley was also very mean when he died his spirit was left to wonder the earth weighted down by heavy chains. Marley wants to save Scrooge from ending up like him so Marley informs Scrooge that he will get a visit from three different spirits for the next three nights. After Jacob Marley vanishes Mr. Scrooge falls asleep. He wakes up the sight of the Ghost of Christmas Past. This ghost has a childish features and a glowing head. Then the ghost takes Scrooge to his nephews to see them having a Christmas party, that Scrooge was not invited to. As the ghost is about to leave he takes Scrooge to a final spot where he sees two children who are starving and living outside. Then The Ghost of Christmas Present vanishes and Mr. Scrooge sees and black hooded figure coming towards him. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes Scrooge to the scene of an unnamed man’s death. While there Scrooge sees two men discussing the dead man’s money and belongings. After begging the ghost to tell him who the man his, Scrooge finds himself in a cemetery and the ghost is pointing to a grave. Scrooge uncovers the snow from the headstone and is shocked. Scrooge was at first inclined to be surprised that the Spirit should attach importance to conversations apparently so trivial; but feeling assured that they must have some hidden purpose, he set himself to consider what it was likely to be. They could scarcely be supposed to have any bearing on the death of Jacob, his old partner, for that was Past, and this Ghost's province was the Future. Nor could he think of any one immediately connected with himself, to whom he could apply them. But nothing doubting that to whomsoever they applied they had some latent moral for his own improvement, he resolved to treasure up every word he heard, and everything he saw; and especially to observe the shadow of himself when it appeared. For he had an expectation that the conduct of his future self would give him the clue he missed, and would render the solution of these riddles easy. (4.38)…

Here are some reasons, the first reason is, in the Christmas carol he made a character named scrooge. Scrooge is supposed to be a bad, cruel, and a rude person. No one likes him in the Christmas carol, everyone is afraid of him. Dickens also created three spirits in the story. Each spirit is supposed to teach Scrooge lessons and his mistakes. The spirits threaten him if he doesn’t change and fix his mistakes. The first spirit took him on a trip into his Christmas past to show him how he acted when he was little. When Scrooge was little his life was filled with joy and happiness but now Scrooge’s life is very dark. The spirit is trying to show Scrooge what is missing in his life. Which is joy and happiness.…

In this scene he is taken to his grave in the future and he then shows his fear and admits that he has done wrong throughout his life once he sees that no one cares that he has died. He says ‘Hear me! I am not the man I was.’ the way he says ‘hear me!’ suggests that he wants everyone to know and hear that he has changed from his pervious self. I think Dickens may have included this episode within the story to show Scrooge admitting he’s now different. Also, earlier in the story, Scrooge says that the poor population should die. However, after seeing what death is like, his point of view may have changed and he may take back what he said…

He remembers how he was rejected, and then he feels regretful and sad for what he had done and what might happen because of him. In the second stave it says, “The school is not quite deserted,” said the Ghost. “A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still” (33). This depicts that Scrooge had no one that really loved him. He didn’t have any real friends or people to talk too. Scrooge thinks about what he has done, and says regretfully, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something” (36). This demonstrates that Scrooge knows that he has made mistakes, and is starting to become a better person, with the Ghosts’ help. Scrooge becomes sad, finally thinking about someone other than himself. “Spirit,” said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live.” “I see a vacant seat,” replied the Ghost, “In an old chimney corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die” (65). This shows that Scrooge really does care about other people. He is recognizing his emotions for other people…

In 'A Christmas Carol', Charles Dickens represents Scrooge as an unsympathetic man who is offered the opportunity to redeem himself. Through use of language, the reader is positioned to view him adversely, but during the journey of morality lessons shown by three spirits, Scrooge recovers his sense of joy by undergoing a significant transformation.
