Earvin grew up playing basketball since he was twelve years old. Earvin was born August 14, 1959. Earvin’s nickname was “Magic” ever since a sportswriter saw him play one of the best high school basketball games. When Magic Johnson got drafted he weighed 255 pounds and stood at six foot nine inches. Johnson went to Michigan state for college; then the Los Angeles Lakers drafted him first in the 1979 draft pick. Magic Johnson’s career took off from there. Magic Johnson had immediate success as a NBA player: most people knew he was good but no one knew he was that good. The first of the many years Magic Johnson played for the Los Angeles Lakers, he help lead them to win the championship, and there Magic got nominated Most Valuable Player Award. From then on Magic was a Lakers player and only a Lakers player, in the next twelve years Magic and Los Angeles team won four more championships. Johnson and Larry Bird were first linked as rivals after Johnson's Michigan State squad defeated Bird's Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA finals.
