Dystopian Novel 'The Maze Runner'
Throughout the fast paced, thrill seeking, dystopian novel The Maze Runner, Thomas changes from a confusued, stubborn, and irritable boy to a brave, persistent, and selfless leader. At the beginning Thomas wakes up in a box, and has no idea who he was or why he was there, and asks questions constantly, wanting to know more, but also being angry for not getting answers right away. In time he learns more about the place, but that just makes him more and more curious. His stubborness soon turns to persistance, and his irratableness turns to determination. He strives to find out more about the place he and many other young boys mysteriously ended up. Sometimes his stubborness was more like disobedience, like when he was specifically told not to

A character in the novel I extremely admired was Thomas, the main character. i admired him because he was brave the whole way throughout the novel. An example which shows this is when he was the leading protagonist, and traps himself inside the maze, then sees a griever for the first time running towards him. Instead of…

Instead of sticking to his normal schedule, and abiding by his mother’s rules, Tom chose to go with Ruby. “Ruby Hornaday steps out of the weeds. She has a mask in one hand and a tire pump in the other. “Need your help.” Tom’s pulse soars. “I got to go to the butcher’s” “Your choice” Ruby turns to go. But really there is no choice at all” (Doerr 142). When he made this decision, his whole outlook on life changed; he now had something to look forward to and something to dream about. This one choice expanded the tiny world he was living in and gave him a new reason to live. Even though he knew he was putting himself in danger, he continued to help Ruby because it made him happy. Joseph Campbell refers to this as “following your bliss” (20). Tom chose to take a risk because it was “exciting” and unpredictable; if he “knew what the outcome was going to be,” it wouldn’t have been an “adventure” (Campbell…

What does it really mean to be insane? Most people put labels on others because they can’t really understand the way that “crazy” person’s mind works. Everyone is different in terms of how they think but society as a whole usually thinks similarly. However, there are those few individuals whose minds operate outside of the moral, ethical and logical thinking of society. In the novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, a man named John Ray, Jr., Ph.D. received the manuscript, entitled Lolita, or the Confession of a White Widowed Male, from the author’s lawyer. The author himself, known by the pseudonym of Humbert Humbert, died in jail of coronary thrombosis. Humbert is a convicted pedophile and murderer who gives an insight in his mind in an attempt to explain his actions. Humbert is actually quite smart and aware of is morally and ethically wrong actions, but he leads the reader on to believe that what he did was justifiable. Through…

“Just follow me and run like your life depends on it. Because it does” (Dashner, 361). In the books The Maze Runner and Tears of a Tiger, they both share the same theme of death. In The Maze Runner, Thomas and his friends constantly live in anxiety that they will all be killed by hideous monsters and never make it out of the maze. During Tears of a Tiger, Andy had witnessed death right in front of him and had scarred him to a very threatening point in his life. Both The Maze Runner and Tears of a Tiger share a common theme of death because both Thomas and Andy are shocked by death, someone committed suicide, and they both witness a death or two.…

“Ava Paige: ‘Wicked is good.’” (The Maze Runner). “Maybe […] there is a beast[…]What I mean is… maybe it's only us.” (Golding, William), “[Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling.” (Golding, William). The first quote from the maze runner shows us that Ava, a character from the movie, is turning opinion on the “Wicked” foundation. She thinks that the bad side is good and the good side is wrong. In the second two quotes from the book, shows that the boys think that they are creating the beast mentally. They think that their minds are becoming the beast. Jack especially, has created a monster of himself. He becomes savage and evil. He becomes bloodthirsty and a killer. From this we see the conflict between human impulse towards savagery and the rules of civilization. Ava, becomes savage to the other teenagers because of her insane and positive thoughts of “Wicked”. She is making conflict with the rules of civilization, thus making her a savage. Some of the little British boys become savage and follow the leadership of Jack and disobeying the rules they all…

It catches my attention how Jem and Scout change during the course of the novel. Jem's the brother of Scout, and is also the oldest. In the begginning of the book, Jem's first thought of bravery meant being able to touch Boo adley's house, only because in his whole life he has never backed down from a dare. As the story progresses on, he slowly starts realizing there is more to that than just touching Boo Radley's house. Jem realizes true bravery through his experienc with his little sister facing the mob in front of the jail, to Atticus facing the mad dog.…

For instance, Atticus had the task of shooting the dog pushed onto him even though he initially did not want to. This situation could be used to symbolize Tom Robinson’s case. When no one wanted to defend Robinson, Atticus was assigned this task. This kind of courage can also be seen through Scout and Jem’s actions. For example, the children were interested in the Radley House even though the rest of their community was scared of what lied inside. "With people like us—that's our share of the bill. We generally get the juries we deserve. Our stout Maycomb citizens aren't interested, in the first place. In the second place, they're afraid” (Lee 23.296) When Atticus says this, he is explaining that people do not want to go against society’s normalities. Even so, Atticus tries his best to teach his children what the right thing to do was, even if that meant being…

Have you and a friend ever been put in a situation separately at different times in your lives, but you both handled the situation very similarly? Lord of the Flies by Wiliam Golding and The Maze Runner by James Dashner put the characters into very similar situations that were resolved similarly, but the stories also contained several differences. In the novel Lord of the Flies a large group of boys crash landed onto an island with having no way to get off the island during the Second World War. The community that the boys create on the island started off a a civil community that had order, but as time went on the boys grew more and more rebellious to the social standards they created in the beginning since there was no rules keeping them…
