Dystopia In The Giver

Creating a perfect world would be the hardest challenge for the smartest people on Earth to ever face. In The Giver by Lois lowry jonas lives in a community in which he thinks has no flaws. When jonas turns twelve he selected to be the receiver of memory in training. As jonas receives the memories from the giver he learns how his community is really an very bad place. He also realizes that the community has taken away so many good things. Some of the things that they have taken away are the right to feel their own emotions, make their own choices and create an family. The community has taken away so many basic rights that instead of creating a utopia they have created a dystopia. Jonas’s community is an dystopia because they have taken away the right to feel their own emotions. The community that Jonas lives has tried so hard to hide and shield off any real emotion. One of the many pleasures that we take for granted is having an real family that cares for you.In order to ensure that no one creates any kind of an family they put it in the rules. In jonas’s community no one is allowed to choose their own family or create any emotional connections with them. “‘Do you Love me?’..... ‘You used an very generalized word, so meaningless that it’s become almost obsolete.’” (127). Jonas is asking his father about one of the many questions and words that have come up in his training. The giver has been giving him memories of true families who care for each other, and this makes jonas wonder what his parents think about the word.
