Dunham Bible Museum: Museum Analysis
The three portraits that are being exhibited at the Dunham Bible Museum are breathtaking, these paintings touched my heart and were the reasons why I chose to write about these paintings: The Messiah, the detailed portrait of Jesus crucified, it shows the love that God has for us, to send Jesus, his only son to save us, to save me, and that his death has given humanity a chance to redeem ourselves, as well the words "Father forgive them" are so powerful as it shows how pure Jesus heart was that he forgave us and died for our sins. He is truly our best example to follow. What are you doing for me? When I see this painting, somehow I can transport myself into many moments in my life when I didn't have God as a priority in my life but He is a

The Liberty Biblical Museum is located in the Jerry Falwell Library. One can find the museum by walking in the main doors, and going down the stairs. The purpose of the museum is to bring the Bible to life by showing different artifacts of the time. The museum has many artifacts that are from the holy land, different manuscripts, and it also has the rare Bible. With reading and visualizing all the different artifacts, one can learn a lot about a culture and their way of life. The museum offers tours, that tend to be an hour long, every Thursday at 12pm. They also offer tours for special occasions, which can be found on their homepage. At the museum, I learned about many artifacts that were related to the Bible and that time frame. My favorite…

This is yet another well-known story from the Bible. It shows a child kneeling on the ground embraced in the arms of someone who means a lot to him. According to Frank this painting symbolized a disobedient son who left his father and home to be on his own and when he had nothing left he crawled back expecting his father to turn him away. But he did not open his arms to let him back in. The painting demonstrates the Baroque style. The emotion and drama involved show the most heartfelt part of the story, not the pain or betrayal only the love of a father and son. The light is brightest on the father and son. Here he interprets the Christian idea of mercy with an extraordinary solemnity, as though this were his spiritual testament to the world (Web Gallery of Art,…

This critique paper is the very first critique paper for art I have ever done. When reviewing the different paintings that I had to choose from to write my paper on, none of them caught my eye like Peter Paul Reubens, “The Raising of The Cross”. The painting was created by use of oil paint on wooden panels in the year 1610. There are many aspects about this painting that catch your eye but the main aspects are the geometric stability it holds, the emotional thrust it throws at the viewer and Reuben’s intentions and meaning behind the painting.…

Have you ever had a painting that really spoke to you? When I visited the David Owsley Art Museum there was one painting in particular that stuck out to me, it was: Right Bird Left by Lee Krasner. Tis painting made me feel happy and gave me a lot of energy during the time I was at the museum. It caught the attention of my eye by using several different visual elements to depict an abstract representation art piece. Along with that it used principle of designs to help the visual elements play out and work in the painting so that things can be depicted to the human eye correctly. This piece might have looked like bird feathers but it used many different techniques to give me a bigger underlying meaning behind a such complex painting. This piece…

Located at the entrance of the third floor that was designated as Europe, I chose a three dimensional sculpture that is called the Archangel Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan by Henry High Armstead. This sculpture was started and finished in the year 1852. There was no art work next to the piece I chose but on the other side of the wall that it was on there was a painting called The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape by Alessandro Tiarini. The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape is an oil painting done on a canvas in 1640. This sculpture is a cast statue based on one of the saints. It was created to show the strength of Saints and how they were loyal, and angelic hosts of heaven out of a bronze material that was shaped and carved. The art work was purchased by the…

Art is a tradition weaved throughout human history. Though it may be beautiful and pleasant to look at, there must be some other reason for its importance in humanity’s heritage than the pleasure received from seeing something beautiful. Pablo Picasso said, “Art is a lie which makes us realize the truth.” This quote is used as an epigraph for Chaim Potok’s My Name is Asher Lev. One can never depict the exact truth, as life exists. However, seeing the way other people observe the world can help audiences discover new perspectives, and learn how they themselves feel; thereby realizing their own truth, as demonstrated in Asher Lev’s Brooklyn Crucifixions.…

Often, the paintings of Mary and Jesus used mainly red and blue and are used interchangeably with one another. Red symbolized the blood and the martyred heroes, whereas the blue stood for heaven, serenity and calmness. Mary was crowned as the queen of heaven when she died and Jesus brought her up to heaven to stand with him in the kingdom of God. Likewise, Romulus and Remus would’ve done the same and bring their mother to live with them in their kingdom/city. In person, it is more stunning to witness not only due to the size, but also because of the vividness the painting still holds after all these years. It seemed as though it was done almost yesterday due to the freshness the content displayed and in comparison to all the other artworks in the area, this stood out to me due to the colors itself. Mignard’s choice to bring attention to the individuals’ clothing by surrounding it with darker colors in the background created a contrast that was not too harsh to view and the bright colors lures one’s eyes into it. Also, his choice of the lighting created a focus that draws the viewer in so they would not have to look elsewhere to determine what the “thesis” of the artwork is. Lastly, the details of the painting are astonishing to see up close. The brushstrokes of the dog’s hair looked as if you could touch it, the muscles in the shepherd’s legs and arms…

My life hasn't gone according to plan, and I made choices in it to achieve what I wanted, settling for less thinking it would get me to my goal quicker. The only thing I have always known is that I wanted to be a mother. I rushed into marriage not once but twice. First marrying a man that ultimately decided he didn’t want a family at all. Within a few months of that marriage ending, I met my sons father and eventually married him despite the emotional and physical abuse, because I knew that I could be what I always wanted, a mother. Both of those choices had tragic results. I am wiser from the experiences and this painting is meant to be a reflection of a woman who has experienced a lot, felt a lot, has been hurt a lot, but is now fine, content, happy with who she is and is ready for someone to see her at her rawest. I have been a very shy person my whole life and only a few people have seen me in my unreserved way. Outside of one or two people, even in the most intimate of relationships, I never let my hair down. This painting portrays the rise of the Dionysian side of my personality. Always a woman, no matter where I am, what I am doing, or who I am with, at the heart of things is a woman exercising restraint and self-control to get through life, but having the Dionysian heart beneath it giving me the strength to accomplish it all. I hope that that is seen in my…

While I was in the museum, I spent most of my time looking at paintings and I found the painting of Saint Gertrude by Miguel Cabrera to be quite beautiful. Painted in 1803, Saint Gertrude’s face appears quite serene to the viewer and has religious appeal as well to those who are Christian or Catholic. The serene expression on her face makes her appear very beautiful in a motherly way in my eyes. And while I was there, I saw a marble statue known as Semiramis by William Wetmore that was carved in 1873. This statue has a classical feel to it and I adore statues that look classical because it makes them appear timeless. And it is that timelessness that gives the statue beauty. Though it appears fragile, I am sure it will be seen by many for many years to come. The last work of art that I enjoyed was an oil painting by John Sargent, which was titled Dorothy and it was made in 1900. What I like about oil paintings, is that it is a media that allows for the painter to create realism. The painter gives life through a range of colors, which you can see when…

"Offering Truth" was painted by Kendra Runnells. This painting has a lot of life lessons and meaning. Visiting the museum, finding at artwork that appealed to me, understating and discussing distinct concepts of various religious has not only increased my knowledge but also prompted me to ask questions and explore even more. At birth, I was told about one religion and how other religions are false. Once I got older, I observed many more religions to understand their nature and mission. This experience helped me see the difference and similarities, broadened my mind, inspired more inquiries I have, and it encouraged me further to discover even more. I am someone who loves to investigate the arts, cultures, and teachings of any religion. Hence, visiting a museum excited my thoughts, and I found an art piece that enthused me to a personal level. Unlike stories and Holy Scriptures, the nature of religious art is a story that provokes the viewer to tell his own version of its…

    The Human Experience

The art work that stands out most to me is one that portrays a young boy as a soldier in the US Army. The human experience from this could be expressed as one of many, love, loss, pain, hope, despair, values, beliefs and as we hope not but even death. I think the artist had love, loss and pain in mind with the painting. This is meaningful to my life because I feel that this is a portrait of myself as a young boy. I joined the US Army at seventeen, finished my basic training, school house training and was shipped off to Iraq with my unit before I was even close to being eighteen. I believed in what I was doing, I lost a lot of family and some really great friends in that war. I too had a picture taken with my uniform and full battle rattle, as we called the bullet proof vest, on. In that picture I was all smiles but honestly I was extremely scared and felt almost alone. This picture shows a young man with the same uniform on smiling. It really takes me back in time and allows me to see what war did to the once innocent young smiling boy that I was. I still to this day believe in all I have done, know that somewhere in there I have done them for the right and values of America but still it bothers me now. It also makes me fear for the young boy in the picture, fear for the outcome that will happen.…
