In order to do well in the course, you must fulfill the speaking assignments exactly. If something is unclear about the expectations for your speech, be sure to ask for clarification. How do I focus my speech? Whether your instructor assigns a specific topic or provides a number of options, you will need to gather material to include in your talk. After you have settled on a particular subject, be certain the focus of your speech is narrow enough to conform to the time limit. One of the most common mistakes students make on their first speech is to try to cover too much material. Not only does this cause the speech to go over the time limit, but it results in content that is too general or superficial. So you should select a limited amount of focused material that is illustrated thoroughly. How can I make my speech more interesting? So therefore the public is forced to adapt to what the media is shelling out to the young minds. Many people go to extremes just to look like a certain person they see from the media. They completely change to what is made popular from the media, even if it means to completely change your image. The media makes so much money off of fads and what is new and we are force to accept the change or be left out and “uncool”. The media sets such high standards that we are born to follow since the media is basically involve with us since day one. The media's perfect image is often fake, created by air brushing and computer enhancing a certain individual to make it seem as that they are perfect. The perfect image is used to advertise new and exciting products, these advertisements make the general public feel as they can become the perfect image if they use a certain product. Which in reality does not live up to the hype the media is out pushing to the general masses. However this “perfect image” point of selling has been installed in the public eyes for hundreds of years and it appears to be going no where anytime soon. In the meantime the media will keep pushing out these perfect images and perfect ways to live out our life for many years to come. So no matter what we do we certainly can't shake that we all want to be perfect little images that we are force feed in the media following every little fad.     In the book, “How to Develop-Self Confidence & Influence People by Public Speaking” The main takeaway from this book is that Dale Carnegie shows how improving public speaking and improving self-confidence are a function of preparation, education, determination and practice. There is no short cut to a better you - rather a long path of self-improvement. He shows you how to develop poise, improve your memory, begin and end a talk, Interest and charm your audience, improve your diction, and Win an argument without making enemies. An important quote that Dale Carnegie mentioned in the book was, “Is there the faintest shadow of a reason why you should not be able to think as well in a perpendicular position before an audience as you can when sitting down? Surely, you know there is not. In fact, you ought to think better when facing group. Their presence ought to stir and lift you. A great many speakers will tell you that the presence of an audience is a stimulus, an inspiration that drives their brains to function more clearly, more keenly.” The reason I think that quote is so important is because it shows how to gain self-confidence, and develop courage. Being able to speak in public isn’t only about changing the world. It can be about making your point heard and noticed, being respected and acknowledged. Another thing I can say related the book is that it is very important not to let anything disturb the focus of your audience. You don’t want anything moving around on stage or in the room, peoples focus gets pulled directly to movement. I say this because being a good public speaker can change your life. It will open doors for you that you never believed you had access to and what is best, it is a skill you can learn and will learn, if you practice.
