Do Men And Women Speak The Same Language?
Do men and women speak the same language? From the beginning of time we have made a clear distinction between men and women. They look different, they each bring their own contribution to society and they both have to go through different obstacles. It was John Gray who wrote a book called “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” which later became a very famous quote to call out on the many differences between the two. Even though both are in fact very different, one would think that they develop language the same way. Before we focus on the gender/language issue, we should first of all consider other factors that alter the way one learns to communicate. For instance, whereas one individual will be born into a family of highly articulate relatives that are quite high in the social hierarchy, another individual will be born into a family that lives on minimum wage and that has never made it to …show more content…
Throughout the eras, people have been making clear distinctions between both sexes and have perhaps gone too far by stating that communication skills are different. Many studies have proven with their statistics that there are striking similarities in the way that men and women express themselves. While looking at the biological and physical differences between the genders, people have simply forgotten to take a look at the psychological part and have just assumed the wrong thing. Another cause of these false claims is to my belief that by stating that there are clear variations in verbal abilities, people are enabled to safely say that there is a better sex and as stated previously, enable men to sit at the top of the hierarchical system, however because those claims have been dismantled in this essay and should therefore just leave it at that and accept that men are not from Mars and women are not from Venus, both are simply from

Brooks goes against females to focus on males, while Tannen goes against males to focus on females. Brooks claims that, “Some of the decline in male performance may be genetic. The information age rewards people who mature early… Girls may, on average, do better at these things” (Brooks 11). On the other hand, Tannen admits that, “Whether women or men are direct or indirect differs; what remains constant is that the women’s style is negatively evaluated- seen as lower in status than the men’s” (Tannen 9). Brooks is suggesting that females mature faster than males, which is why they progress more than males. Tannen is suggesting, on a different note, that women are looked at different because of the way they speak, whether it be direct or…

In the article, “But What Do You Mean?”, author Deborah Tannen discusses what she has observed to be differences in ways that women and men communicate. She concludes by stating that neither communication style in incorrect, however, to alleviate miscommunication women and men should use language that is understood by both parties. While I don’t disagree with Tannen’s observations I find some flaws with her solution. Women and men are not significantly different, as recent brain studies have shown, I believe that the differing socialization of women and men as children breeds the stylistic communication differences Tannen describes. So while limiting one’s speech to common language may work in a pinch, there is a long term solution that could…

We All Have Voices Men and women are both humans, but they’re not the same. They communicate in extremely opposite ways, and don’t always comprehend each other. The problem in between male and female communication is that the men are more directly and women re more complex and emotional than men. In “ His politeness is her powerlessness” by Deborah Tannen, an american academic wrote, “ The women does not feel she has the right to ask directly.”…

In conclusion, the author states that men are expected to be tough and women are expected to seek support. These themes seem to be the root of the conflict between the sexes, so I would propose that each sex should do their best to break away from these expectations. Men should strive to be more open and less concerned about preserving a macho image whereas women should strive to be less dependent on the approval of others. While my proposed solution would not completely abolish miscommunication between the sexes, it would be a large step in the right direction.…

As the society changes to individualism, there are a lot of people having problem with communication. Become a big issue that although communication is a very important skill in our life, some people are just living with ignoring this fact. Researchers try to find the what causes are affected to people and some of them found the issue was from between men and women that using differences brain function which is men used left half of their brains while listing to the novel, while the women used both halves of their brains. However, I would be hard to agree this research. Although researchers found men and women uses different brain function, I think the most important thing is their environment, we would not say that who is a better listener by gender because a person’s behavior shows up from their personality. Particularly, it is caused by their friendship or from parents or it can affect his or her cultural style.…

Two advantages that females have due to the organization of their brains are superiority in verbal tests and being able to convey emotions better due to the fact that their emotional functions are within the left and right side of the brain, when for men, the function is only in the right side. Female brains are superior in verbal tests because language skills including grammar, spelling, and writing are all housed in the left side of the brain, whereas in a male brain, the language skills are located in the front and back of the brain which makes it harder for them to pull this information. This means that it is easier for women to recall language skills because it all resides in the left side of the brain. Women are also superior in conveying their emotions because their emotional functions are within their left and right side of their brains. This means that women are capable are speaking their emotions because their emotional functions also resides with the language functions which means women can actually speak their emotions while men struggle with this.…

It is generally said that “Men are from Mars; Women are from Venus”. Although both of them belong to the human species, they very much differ from each other, physically, as well as, mentally. Since the start of the human civilization, there has been a never-ending debate if men and women do actually differ or not. They may be equal, but, it’s certain that they are not the same.…

The way people are brought up has a lot to say about the way they conduct themselves in every aspect of life, including communication. From the time they are born, children have already been assigned a gender. Blue blankets are used for baby boys, and pink ones for girls. It is difficult for a child to grow up without experiencing some form of gender bias or stereotyping. Children learn at a very early age what it means to be a boy or girl in our society. During childhood children are exposed to many factors which influence their attitudes and behaviors regarding gender roles. These attitudes are learned in the home, in schools, and even at the playground where children play among their peers. Gender roles are taught not only from our homes and schools, but also from common media, television, magazines, books, etc. Almost every part of our lives has some sort of outside influence, showing the ‘norm' of behavior and thinking styles. Men are to provide for a family, insuring the basic food and shelter needs. Women take care of the family, providing emotional support and…

But there are actually quite a few similarities as well. It is said that woman tend to be a lot more verbal than men. Men in fact, have that same quality depending on their upbringing. My husband for an example can be quite the talker. During our discussions I am lucky if I am able to get more than a few sentences out. Men and women who share similar social backgrounds possess and use similar vocabularies as well. Social background influences vocabulary far more than gender does. Men and women are about equally verbally assertive. Although, sometimes voice timber may have an influence upon perceived assertiveness. I have a tendency to think that communication cannot be categorized with regards to gender. There happens to be a lot of generalization when deciding which gender does what when…

I have always heard that men and women are from different planets and have their own cultures, while in reality we have all grown up on the same planet and interact with each other in different ways on a daily basis. Men and women are different in many ways; they see the world through completely different perspectives. The key to understanding the differences is in the way men and women communicate. Men and women differ psychologically in the way they act, from the style in which they communicate to the way in which they attempt to influence others. These gender differences in communication and influence tactics also have implications for gender differences in communication styles; communication differences in the workplace; differences in non-verbal and verbal communication; and miscommunication between men and women. Differences in communication style between men and women are visible physically, mentally and behaviorally. These two genders are different at the way how they act, sense, think and speak. Furthermore, one of the major dissimilarity between the sexes is the way they communicate. Therefore, the major common of dissimilarity in communication affects both sexes in every perspective.…
