Diversity In Police
Diversity is an essential component in any Police Department to overtly be effective and trustworthy in the community. The diversity of officers can ultimately deal with situations in an effort to mirror the population in which they serve. For example, a predominate neighborhood of Hispanics or Latinos would ideally be for an officer of the same ethnic background. The communication between the officers and the community is highly important to acquire accurate statements and instill trust in the community. Second languages are exceedingly important in any police department to break through any language barriers that are instilled between the community and the police officers patrolling. With that being said, officers of different ethnic backgrounds can diminish the occurrences of disparity in the country. …show more content…
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “The number and percentage of full-time sworn female officers also increased since 1987. About 58,000 females were employed as local police officers in 2013, compared to about 27,000 in 1987”. Female officers provide a vital tool in communicating with victims. Female officers are more thoughtful and sympathetic to victims, especially to domestic and raped victims because they are able to take their time to understand what has occurred rather than a male figure, in most cases can be very straight forward with very little emotion. The compliance of the victim is essential in providing evidence for a case. Indeed these aspects of diversity within a police department are only aiding the overall goal of community policing. During the Nixon Administration the federal government began to push employers on obtaining a good faith effort to employ women and minorities and track to their progress. In 1969 the act “Executive Order” was passed by President Nixon which stated that the federal government could not use sex as a requirement for hiring which changed policing within the Federal Bureau of Investigation and municipal police departments.
