Distracted Driving Essay

In the United States, one of the main causes of car accidents is distracted driving. This includes, eating, talking to others in the car, or texting while driving. Texting while driving is the most common type of distracted driving. In my opinion, people need to become more aware of the dangers of texting and driving and there needs to be stricter laws regarding texting and driving. Using phones while driving is very dangerous and most states do have laws to address it, but is not very strictly enforced watched. To make the roads safer, there needs to be stricter laws and enforcement, and to help prevent the problem altogether, people need to be educated on the dangers of using phones while driving. Even is a person is just talking to someone on the phone, it removes one hand that helps stabilize the steering wheel and could also cause an accident. In 2016, 391,00 people were injured due to a distracted driving accident which not only includes texting while driving, but also talking on the phone while driving. However, what about all of the new technology that allows people to talk on phones without actually holding a phone? While it may seem like a good solution and is slightly safer, it still takes some of the drivers attention away from the road and makes them less aware of their surroundings. When people are driving, they should have their full attention on the road and not be distracted by talking on the phone. On the other hand, some people may say that having a phone nearby can help in emergency situations. However, in most emergency situations, a person cannot easily access their phone. Also, if there is an emergency that doesn’t involve the driver and the phone can still be accessed, the driver can pull over and safely use their phone. Using phones while driving can tragically impact a person’s life. In some cases, a person was hit by a car that wasn’t paying attention while using their phone while driving. On the other hand, a person could be impacted because they were not paying attention themselves. People could also be affected in less important ways. Depending
There also needs to be ways to stop the problem from occurring in the first place. I think that it first needs to start with banning texting and driving in all 50 state. In addition, there should be a law against bus drivers using their phone at all while driving because you need to focus even more when driving a larger vehicle with children in it. However, even if there is a ban in all of the states, the only ways for police to tell is you are texting and driving is by looking into your car or camera seeing if you are using your phone while driving. While I don’t think that there will be an easier way to tell if someone is driving while distracted, there could be a way to prevent it in the first place. A solution could be an app on a person’s phone that allows them to not get calls or notifications from texts while driving. This way the driver won’t be tempted to look at their phone. Another solution could be to just turn off your phone while driving. The only problem that could occur is if your needed your phone quickly if an emergency situation did arise which is why the app may be a better option. Stricter enforcement and laws are needed to help prevent using phones while driving, but there are also other options to stop distracted driving
