Disaster
“Disaster, Disaster”

Oh Disaster, Disaster how cruel you are
Oh Disaster, Disaster how rude you are
You shake the ground beneath my feet
You attack me, and you wake me up from my sleep
I have so little time to get away from you
I never though you would become my foe

Oh Disaster, Disaster what have I done
Oh Disaster, Disaster why did you have to come?

Because of you I have nothing left
Except for bricks and rocks and the smell of dust
You made me cry, you make me scream
You make me panic and entangled me with fear
I walk around; I search the streets
Looking for someone that still has a heart that beats
Oh what have you done what have I seen
Such cruelty I had never foreseen

Oh Disaster, Disaster what have I done
Oh Disaster, Disaster why did you have to come?

Oh Disaster, Disaster you wicked thing
At your funeral I will happily sing
You murdered and slaughtered my loved ones
Mercilessly took their lives and left none.
Oh Disaster, Disaster if there’s any goodness in your heart
You would have never came, never approached me from the start
You have a very angry soul
It shall never be forgiven; I won’t forgive it for sure
I worked endless night to build this life
In an instance, you destroyed it and blew it like a kite
What should I do where shall I go
If I had the power I would have stood in your way and said no
Now, I’m alone like I have never been before
My mind my body my feelings have all become sore..
Oh Disaster, Disaster what have I done
Oh Disaster why did you have to come?

I remember once hearing about you
About your cruelty and viciousness, oh yes I knew
I never thoughts that one day it would be me that you will pursue
Never once I thought that I will encounter your milieu
I guess I was careless, foolish and naïve
Because of my deliberate ignorance, myself I deceived
You came around and your goal you achieved
As for me, I’m left here with a heart full of grief
I’m sad, I’m angry and confused
I’m mad I’m sorry and abused
Suffering is all I see
Is that

In the book “A Magnificent Catastrophe” the author, Edward J. Larson, writes about all of the little details that has occurred in the First Presidential Campaign in the 1800s. He begins his book with how the two parties, the Republicans (Jefferson) and Federalists (Adams), were going to compete in who will govern the United States now that it is a free country and no longer under Britain’s rule. Although they had at first been friends they soon became enemies because of how they believed the government should be. Jefferson believed that the government should be a populist government that trusted popular rule. While Adams believed that America should have a strong government and that al the power rested in the president. When Adams was president he brought fear when he was engaged in the XYZ Affair which is when he bribed the French to comply with their negotiations. The people in America feared that they would be ruled by a foreign power. Adams used his presidential power to threaten people or bribe them into doing whatever he wanted. When Jefferson won the election of the 1800s he fixed all the wrongs that Adams had done. Larson’s book has many positive aspects that have taught me more about the election of the 1800s than any classroom would have.…

    A Personal Tragedy

Elisabeth Stuart Phelps captures the essence of time when “ young ladies had not begun to have ‘opinions’ upon the doctrine of evolution, and before feminine friendships and estrangements were founded on the distinctions between protoplasm and bioplasm” (Phelps 8). She writes a kunstlerroman novel of young woman who has the ability to go far with her artistic talent and looses her inspiration after being married. Another author who tackles similar issues is Louisa May Alcott and her novel “Little Women”. Alcott conveys different perceptions for women and conventions what they must adhere to. Conventions in this retrospect deals with ideology that at a certain age young women give up their what is determined, a ‘childhood passion’ to assume the role of a wife. Both Phelps’s novel “ The Story of Avis” and Alcott’s “ Little Women” brings forth the idea that women through marriage were being suppressed and abused by the social constraints that has been set for them. Also, the role of mother, wife and then a person conflicts with any aspirations for being financially independent and/ or a woman seeking a creative lifestyle. A more contemporary type thinking might question this by asking why cant women have the best of worlds, a family and a career? However, Phelps and Alcott works speaks for them by giving us a realistic and creative outlook on domestic life for women who want both.…

    Science Fiction Disaster

Science fiction films can tell a lot about how Americans think about the environment and the entanglements between them. Science Fiction and disaster films are not a unique phenomena in American cinema. These films are also in cultures that produce movies. Japan would be one of these cultures with the films like Godzilla and The Sinking of Japan. Movies provide an insight into what these people fear while also giving commentary as to what people think of the world. Ever since the 1950’s Science fiction has merged with disaster films. These films are more common in american cinema than natural disaster this is due to the high profits that they produce. Today’s Hollywood has recently produced a hybrid genre involving environmental disaster and science fiction. This disaster is either manmade or something that nature has produced. This production of disaster is the entanglement I’m referring too. These films show the constant struggle of man attempting to control nature and nature unwilling to be chained by man.Films have always adapted to what was going on at the time. These movies demonstrate how the Hollywood portrays the manifestation of environmental fears of Americans in science fiction films. In addition, these films provide a sense of hope because they are able to show people that they have the technology to overcome these pressing…

“It’s the end of the world as we know it!” The musical band REM stated it best in the lyrics of their hit song titled “It’s the End of The World”: “It’s the end of the world as we know it (It’s time I had some time alone) and I feel fine, fine”(REM). There have been many stories written throughout history highlighting the total destruction of societies and revelations of the future, otherwise known as an apocalypse. One such story of an apocalypse is Richard Matheson’s novel, I Am Legend. The novel is a cautionary tale of the evils of our society such as isolationism, alienation, as well as racism from the days past to the ever evolving future and the path the world is taking to not repeat them through the story’s unraveling of plot and character development.…

    Tragedy

A tragedy is a drama or writing piece in which the main character is brought to a situation that will cause much pain to the life of the character. A tragedy is a narrative that portrays calamitous events and has an unhappy but meaningful ending. Many people like tragedies because they are loved and wanted by so many people. Take for example Shakespeare he is famous for his many tragedies. The reason why he wrote so many was because people liked them a lot, just like today. Also many people like tragedies because we like to watch people fail. We like to see that other people face hardship and we are not alone. That may be bad to say but that’s the truth, take for a example if you failed a test and your friend failed it too. It makes you feel better because you know you weren’t the only one. In addition to that many people like tragedies because the conflict is entertaining and has a lot of suspense. The same reason why people watch this type of conflict is the same reason we read them. They are entertaining; re assuring that we have normal lives and interesting. I think they are enjoyable because sometimes you like to see what other people might be going through. Also I happen to like seeing that things resolve for the good, or the strength that people have to make it through something bad. The value or reading tragedies are you are able to see the ability of different people or the impact of the events on the world. For example, the murder of the Newtown kids, JFK and even Hurricane Sandy. These may not be dramas or plays but they are still major tragedies that we have faced. Now because of them something are changed or approached differently. The value we gain is…

Is the tragedy of Oedipus Rex’s downfall the fact that he beds his mother, and killed his father? Or is the fact the he did these things unwittingly. Oedipus a wise ruler and a good man in many ways was doomed from his self, from birth. This is what Sophocles would refer to as a hamartia, or tragic flaw. Oedipus refers to the people of his country as his children, the people are aware that as a the king he is kind however he is overwhelmingly filled with so much pride that he is blind. When Oedipus responded to the deltaic oracles, he was not aware that he would be the one to meet his personal demise, he was blinded by pride.…

The Greek tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles, which Nietzsche considers to be among humankind’s greatest accomplishments, achieve their sublime effects by taming Dionysian passions by means of the Apollonian. Greek tragedy evolved out of religious rituals featuring a chorus of singers and dancers, and it achieved its distinctive shape when two or more actors stood apart from the chorus as tragic actors. The chorus of a Greek tragedy is not the “ideal spectator,” as some scholars believe, but rather the representation of the primal unity achieved through the Dionysian. By witnessing the fall of a tragic hero, we witness the death of the individual, who is absorbed back into the Dionysian primal unity. Because the Apollonian impulses of the Greek tragedians give form to the Dionysian rituals of music and dance, the death of the hero is not a negative, destructive act but rather a positive, creative affirmation of life through art.…
