Direct Observation
-This video displayed how direct instruction is used in learning tasks like reading, pronunciation, and spelling. When the teacher asked the students to perform a task they could only participate when the teacher tapped on the desk. Students are only allowed to express what they know only when they are instructed to. When the students performed the task correctly, they were rewarded a point on the board. When they performed out of direct instruction, they earned a negative point. The teachers felt that this was an efficient approach to learning because the students are only allowed to say the right response.

2. What did you like and not like about the instruction shown in the video? Why?

-Overall, I did not like the method being used because it does not allow the student to be their own individual. I saw it as a military style method because they can only participate when demanded to. The tapping on the desk dehumanized the students as if they were animals because they can only respond to the teacher’s demand. I can see this as a classical conditioning method that doesn't indicate that the students are learning anything. They are only learning that they can speak when the teacher asks them to. Even the tone of the students came off as an uneasy feeling. They weren't enthusiastic when responding, simply because of the routine.

This day care strictly lets the children develop their own ideas and explanations for the word they view around them. There is no right or wrong in what the children create because it allows them to be proud of what they have created. It is important to let the children express themselves because they develop positive insight when solving problems. They also display the children's activities, explanations, and daily routines with pictures on the wall. This allows for visitors to have an insight on how the children process ideas and

    My OR day consisted of a hernia repair, a colonoscopy, and a hemorroidectomy. The role of the surgeon was to come in and perform the surgery. The anesthesiologist induced anesthesia, and monitored the patients heart and respirations and other vitals during the surgery. They also bring the patient out of anesthesia and extubate them. The circulating nurse job was to monitor during surgery and make sure the patient is safe, and to call the patients family during and after the surgery. The circulating nurse also goes to the pre-op holding area and assesses the patient prior to surgery and brings them into the OR. The surgical technicians job is to assist the surgeon during the procedure and hand him the required tools needed. They also count before and after the surgery to make sure all tools are present and accounted for. The PACU nurse role was to monitor the patient’s vitals and pain after surgery and to administer any medications. They also monitor the patient’s arousal after surgery and the surgical site for any possible complications. The first surgery I saw was a hernia repair. The surgeon made a 6-8 inch incision in the abdomen and repaired a recurrent hernia in the small intestine. He then put in a mesh to keep everything in place. General anesthesia was used for this procedure and the patient was intubated and tolerated/woke up well. Betadine skin prep was used and general draping techniques were used. In PACU the nurse observed the patients level of consciousness and pain level. She also monitored the drainage from the wound and the wound site, and vitals. The second procedure I saw was a colonoscopy accompanied by a hemorroidectomy. First the surgeon did the colonoscopy by lubricating and inserting a tube with a camera into the anus and up through to the opening of the stomach.     On Wednesday July 2nd, 2014 I visited Wiley Mildred Family Day care center to observe a group of children that I have never met at a house I have never been to. Throughout my hour that I spent at Wiley Mildred I observed a group of children interacting with each other as well as the caregivers as they were having their outside privileges.     Houck used a video as her activating strategy, a flipchart for her main instruction, and a worksheet for the individual practice time. The video used as the activating strategy lasted for about six minutes. Ms. Houck would pause the video a different times and talk about the instruction pieces in the video. The flipchart was part of her core instruction and it lasted for about thirty to thirty-five minutes. The flipchart was interactive and it had student work through the content in a problem-based structure. The worksheet, that was for individual practice, lasted for about fifteen minutes. This particular worksheet was not graded and it was used to help students practice the material taught during instruction and to given them time to apply what they had learned independently. The sequencing and pacing was very appropriate for engaging students and promoting their learning. The pacing for this particular class was slightly slower then I expected. But, this class was an all-inclusive class (students with a variety of special needs, learning disabilities, or specific accommodations), which is a major factor in the sequencing and pacing of the lessons. Because the lesson was not rushed, it seemed as if the students grasped a better understanding of the content and they were able to apply the strategies independently during the activity time.     I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old.
