Direct Characterization Of Christopher Boone
When I first looked at the title of the book the curious incident of the dog in the night-time, I immediately judged the book for its cover. I thought to myself “what kind of book would have a title like this.” The title seemed long and childish. I did not realize that there was a story behind the title until I started reading. Now that I am eighty pages into the book, I am highly intrigued. The most interesting aspects of the novel is the main character, Christopher Boone, the title, and the pictures in the book that help Christopher illustrate an idea. So far the book has not produced anything disappointing.
Christopher Boone is a very interesting character. He is very intelligent and has a genius brain when it comes to mathematics. He does not like to be touched and hates the color yellow. Christopher’s character is very contradictory. For example he tells us that he does not tell lies (Page19 “I do not tell lies.”) yet he tells a white lie (Page 48 Lies to his dad about where he has been). He is unable to socially interact with people or interpret emotions and this is due to a mild form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. In

In many adult books I have read I have never come across one that has pictures or illustrations as this one does. Christopher is a visual thinker, which means that he needs visual aids to help him understand a situation. For example in chapter 3, Christopher tells us that he has a hard time interpreting different facial expressions because people’s faces move to fast for him to comprehend. Therefore, he uses visuals such as charts, graphs, pictures and diagrams when he is trying to explain something to the reader. As a reader, it was sometimes hard for me to understand what Christopher was trying to say, for example when he explained math problems, the visuals really helped me understand the text

pg. 8: analogy of bread slicer for brain. “he was asking to many questions and he was asking them to quickly. They were stacking up in my head like loaves in the factory where Uncle Terry works. Christopher sees himself as a logical and curious person, he also thinks that he is ahead of mostly everybody in his class. As well as he is so determined to prove that he is not as low as his peers, he proved it by scoring a perfect score on his math exam. This would help his grade and help him get into the best colleges. He deals with the fact that he’s different than other people by performing his best so he can excel and achieve more. Even though he knows that he is a little different than everybody else, he still tries to become significant. For example a time when Christopher realized he was different was in chapter 3. It states “I kept the piece of paper in my pocket and took it out when I didn’t understand what someone was saying.” This is when Siobhan drew him a bunch of different facial expressions. It was difficult for him to realize what people were feeling , so he either asked them what they were feeling or just walked away. This shows he is different.…

Some of these odd behaviours are done to calm himself. When Christopher explains why he would be a good astronaut, he says “I really like small spaces, so long as there is no one else in them with me. Sometimes when I want to be on my own I get into the airing cupboard outside the bathroom . . . and sit there and think for hours and it makes me feel very calm” (Haddon 41). This exemplifies Christopher’s use of very odd behaviours to calm himself. Christopher is the only character in the novel capable of explaining how he makes use of this odd behaviour. In addition, Christopher demonstrates an odd behaviour when he makes certain decisions. When Christopher explains why people make certain decisions, he says “But you don't know if you are going to like something because you haven't tasted it yet, so you have favourite foods and you choose these, and you have foods you don’t like and you don't choose these, and then its simple” (Haddon 85). This quote expresses Christopher’s dislike of trying new things. Even though this statement only applies to him, it proves that people with Aspergers only do things that they know they like from previous experiences. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory exemplifies this behaviour by keeping to a fixed routine everyday. Christopher is the best possible narrator because he is the only person who can explain why he performs these odd…
