You then find yourself frustrated because you like the books better than the movies. Our class has read and watched Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and there are a lot of differences and similarities between the book and movie such as the characters, settings, and plot events.

Some of the character differences and similarities are that in Act 1 Scene I, Sampson who was a Capulet Servant wants to fight but, in the movie Sampson was just walking around and bumped into a Montague servant. In Act 3 Scene I Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, came back to fight after he killed Mercutio but, in the movie Tybalt just walks away and Romeo ran after him to start another fight. In the book when Romeo was killing Tybalt he got hit in the neck, but in the movie he got hit in the heart. In Act 4 Scene 3 in the book Capulet pushes Juliet when she is supposedly dead but in the movie Capulet just leaves her be. The most important difference in the character section is in Act 5 Scene 5 when Paris is at Juliet’s grave Paris gets killed by Romeo but in the movie Paris isn’t even at the grave site and isn’t killed! In Zeffirelli’s and luhrmann’s individual movies on the Shakespearean play of Romeo and Juliet, they show a great deal of focus on the theme of conflict, which had occurred mainly between the two rivals of the play, the Montagues and the Capulets. Although the movies are based on the same play, they differ quite a lot. Zeffirelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet was set in the 1600s, which was accurate for the play. For luhrmann’s version, he set the movie in the modern era which inevitably causes a drastic difference between the two movies but they both focused their themes of conflict on the help of sound effects, costumes, and visual movements.…

‘Romeo and Juliet' and ‘The West Side Story' are both movies based on William Shakespeare's play. They are very similar in many ways, but different in others. It is about two teens that fall in love and see each other without their families knowing, because their families have a feud against each other. I will be discussing the differences and similarities between, Romeo and Tony, Juliet and Maria and finally, the families and the Gangs, which are in the movies, ‘Romeo & Juliet' and ‘West Side Story'. For an example the Romeo in the Zeffirelli version tends to show much emotion. When he sees Juliet dead he begins to cry and weep. In the Carlei version Romeo tends to keep his emotions together. He doesn’t cry and weep. Another thing that is very different between the two is how Friar reacts. Friars emotion in the Zeffirelli movie was very worried. He knew that he made a mistake and the death of Juliet and Romeo was partially his fault. On the other hand in the Carlei version the Friar doesn’t appear to worried at all. He just leaves Juliet there to kill herself. One of the main different things between the two during the death scene is when Juliet wakes up. In the Carlei version Juliet wakes up just as Romeo takes the poison, so she is with him as he dies. In the Zeffirelli version Romeo is already dead when Juliet wakes up.…

The Zefferelli version is different because it is the older movie version. One person tells what is going to happen in the movie. It also has fewer lines from the real Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet than the Luhrmann. It also cuts some parts out from the book. They used swords to fight and Mercutio died by being stabbed with a sword. Mercutio dresses normally back then. Romeo and Juliet met in the ballroom and they kiss behind the crowd by the food.…

We have recently been studying two different stories in our class. We read the first act of Romeo and Juliet and watched the movie West Side Story. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed both. Our assignment is to write a compare/contrast paper on what we have read so far in Romeo and Juliet and what we saw in the move West Side Story. I found that there are many things alike and many things different between the two.…

The characters do have some differences, since they are created in another place and time. For example, Doc is more helpless than Friar Laurence; Det. Shrank shows the dark side (not the wiser side) of the law; the religious side of Maria and Juliet comes from a different motivation. There are also other possibilities for comparison--are the characters Anybodys and Action similar to Shakespeare's clowns in the way they comment on society? Are Rosalia, Velma and the other women Romeo's Rosalind--stereotypes of women by naive men?…

The characters play a large role in both movies as they are the ones telling the story of Romeo and Juliet. The characters were positioned to be seen with weird quirks as Baz Luhrmann is very artsy film producer, as he in shows in the personalities of the main characters seen in act one. The main characters in the Baz Luhrmann movie were: Romeo, Benvolio, Juliet, Tybalt and Paris. Romeo’s personality in the act, for example, was depressing and moody as he was seventeen, a teenage boy which makes his character adolescent and immature which can be seen when he tries to kiss Juliet at the party when he first speaks to her. Romeo was soon to be more pushy and forceful in wanting Juliet. As for Juliet, her persona can be seen to be smart but yet…

These works of drama and film have many similarities and differences. To compare them, we have to think about the different time background and different society situations of each. In the original Shakespearean comedy, the main setting place is 1590s Padua, a city in Italy. In the movie, it is late 1990s American at a high school named “Padua High School.” In consideration of ages and identification, there are some dissimilar details between the two versions. For example, the main topic from the beginning to the end in Shakespeare’s play is about marriage, while the main topic of the movie is about a romantic relationship in a high school environment. However, although the type of romantic situation is different, essentially the main idea…

In the movie when Romeo heads to the monument he already had the poison. In the play he goes to the Apothecary and buys the poison. Another thing that is different is the letter. In the movie Friar John ha the letter and has his back turned when they ride past him. In the play John is in the house where a sickness is when Romeo and Balthasar ride past him. A third thing that is different is in the play Paris goes to the monument a little before Romeo. In the movie, it is only Romeo that went to the monument. The fourth thing is related to the third difference. In the play, after Paris sees Romeo they fight. When they are fighting Romeo kill Paris. Romeo then says his goodbyes to Juliet. In conclusion, Act V in the play is way different then the Act V in the…

Though there are some similarities there is some difference also. One difference is that the movie that stars Leonardo Whiting and Olivia Hussey is set in the modern day. Though this takes place in the present time, the speech and tone is of the original script. The actors therefore speak the same way William Shakespeare would have spoken back in 1500s. These two young actors also made an impact in playing their roles as Romeo and Juliet because the film was very popular among the young…

There are more characters, more meeting between the two, and a lot more depth. For example their meetings are far less detailed, when Thisbe and Pyramus talk through hole the wall, it never truly tells you what they say. During the Balcony Scene it is very descriptive. Romeo says, “With love’s light wings did I o'erperch these walls, for stony limits cannot hold love out, and what love can do, that dares love attempt. Therefore thy kinsmen are no stop to me.” (6.3.66-69) There is no where close to this amount of detail about what is being said in Pyramus and Thisbe. Another difference is how it doesn’t describe why Pyramus and Thisbe are forbidden to love each other. In Romeo and Juliet we know it is because the rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets. In Pyramus and Thisbe all it says about it is, “Their nearness made them acquainted, and love grew, in time, so that they would have married, but their parents forbade it.” (Lines 4-7) So for whatever reason, these neighbors forbid their children to be in love. In Romeo and Juliet though, it actually describes how the Montagues and Capulets are rivals and Romeo is son of Lord Montague, and Juliet is daughter of Lord…

Every person who has gone through high school probably understand and knows Romeo and Juliet. This piece of seemingly common knowledge is referenced in many movies, books, and paintings throughout time. Often though, much of these references change parts of the classic story to show a different meaning or attract a different audience. The common part of these different artistic interpretations is that the role of characterization exists. Understanding these characters is done through details and any other tools the interpreter has to use. Often, these details can be noticed and show similarities or differences between the interpretation and Shakespeare’s original. Tybalt’s death scene is one that has been interpreted many times with changes…
