At a young age, I had always had an aggressive appetite, never caring about what I put into my body because I was young, and it was of no concern to me. Over the last 5 years, I have been more aware of my eating habits, but still not making a conscious effort to change what my body intakes. Throughout, My Diet Analysis research, I was able to identify eating habits that I was unaware of specifically during the weekdays. I decided to record two of my busiest days during the week, Monday and Tuesday and one lacks day, being Sunday. My findings were somewhat surprising, showing me on paper just exactly how unhealthy my eating habits are. My diet analysis gave me just the motivation I needed to fully make a change within my everyday diet. Overall, it is very clear that I need to make some changes within my diet on a daily basis in order become fit and healthy.
My results from my 3 day recall shocked me slightly, because I didn’t realize how little I ate, but how unhealthy many of my food choices were. I wasn’t in range with my calorie intake for the 3 days. My calorie intake was over 1500, and my recommended calorie intake was a little over 1200. The foods I ate that consisted of the most calories were foods from fast food restaurants, mainly being McDonalds, and foods that were full of carbs. I generally eat a lot of fast food during the week because my schedule is so hectic and nonstop, I don’t have time to indulge in anything else. My calorie intake was higher on Sunday and Tuesday than it was on Monday. My overall calorie intake on Monday was 100.1, Tuesday it was 2312.7 and on Sunday 1258.7. I was a little surprised to see that my calorie intake on Monday was lower than on Sunday, but after reviewing the foods I consumed, it made sense. Out of the 3 days, Monday was the day I consumed the most vegetables, green tea, and water.     Medifast claims to be a low calorie, low fat diet that many people have joined. The plan is based around high protein shakes, bars and soups. The most popular choice is the 5 and 1, which consists of 5 Medifast meals and 1 “lean and green” meal. The caloric intake claims to be somewhere between 800 and 1,000 calories per day; however, when I entered a daily diet sample into the Diet Analysis program, I found a significant difference. The sample recommended a Medifast ready to drink Dutch chocolate shake for breakfast. Mid morning, a suggestion of Medifast scrambled eggs with a dash of parsley. Lunch was the first half of the lean and green meal, suggesting six ounces of roasted turkey with one cup of steamed mustard greens topped with one teaspoon of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. The mid afternoon snack was a Medifast strawberry creme shake blended with ice and water. The remaining portion of the lean and green meal was suggested for dinner and included Medifast’s cream of broccoli soup with one-half cup steamed broccoli added for texture. A night snack of a vanilla shake was also shown. Using the dietary recommendations in the dietary analysis program for me, this sample meal plan only provided me with 54% of the calorie intake, or 773.24 kcalories. With a RDI of a minimum of 1200 kcals, this diet is insufficient in meeting metabolic goals, thus requiring supplements to enhance metabolism. Also, the carbohydrate requirements were 54.98 g, when I have a recommendation of 160-231 g per day. The fat requirement of 32-55 g per day were also not met, only providing 17.85 g.     In order to improve my current diet, I need to reduce my caloric intake to the 1500-calorie diet recommended on USDA’s SuperTracker. The most efficient way to do this is to eat healthier meals at home rather than unhealthy, easy to procure fast food. In addition, I exceed my sodium intake with 2,016 mg on average, 516 mg over the recommended amount. Due to harmful effects of high sodium intakes on blood pressure, a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney diseases, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine established the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for Sodium at 2,300 mg.     Over the course of this week I have learned many things about my eating habits. I found that when I am very busy I tend to eat less and healthier. When I am just sitting around I tend to eat more than necessary and the foods are not as good for me. Using this tracker has really helped me to see what I am consuming, as far as carbohydrates, fats, sugars, proteins, sodium, and total calories. I have also been able to tell that the more active I am the more calories that I burn in a day. Before I started using the tracker I never gave much thought to how many calories I was burning just walking around, cleaning, cooking, and working. My eating habits are not the greatest. This week I went to the beach for a couple of days and my eating habits while we were driving to and from Delaware was horrible. I ate fast food and consumed way to much sodium and sugars. When we were cooking for ourselves and walking around all day my numbers were much better. I did notice using this tracker though that I need to eat more vegetables and proteins, and cut back on my sugars. I have a hard time staying under my daily sugar allotment.     Keeping up a behavior can be hard, “the motivation must come from within.” For the past 23 days I have been striving to change and succeed, by the 22nd of October, in two specific nutritional behavior goals. One of them was to intake at least 30 grams of fiber on weekdays and at least 25 grams on weekends. The other was to reduce my sodium intake by a quarter, on weekdays, of what it was per day and reduce it by an eighth on weekends. This preparation all started about a week before my 23 days of transformation. In the three beginning days I tracked my diet and found that my low fiber and high sodium consumptions were eye-opening problems. My average fiber intake per day rested at 21.18g, which was significantly lower than my goal of 38g per day. As this issue arose so did my awareness that multiple aspects of my health were at risk. For example, my low fiber intake could place me in danger of developing heart disease. Fiber nutrients reduce the chance of disease like heart disease, diabetes, and many other frightful illnesses. In addition, foods that consist of fiber provide a feeling of fullness without additional calories being added to a diet. As for my Sodium intake, I was recommended a target of 1500mg a day but I was actually devouring a skyrocketing 3959.4mg a day. Without thinking twice I knew I had to make significant behavior changes. Concerning my towering sodium intake, I found that high sodium consumption makes the body preserve more water, which can raise the blood volume and, in turn, increase blood pressure. Considering my high blood pressure it would be essential and crucial to lower my sodium intake. Fortunately, the data collected demonstrated that the amount of sodium I have been taking in each day has been playing a role in my elevated blood pressure.     Throughout the semester I have been recording my eating habits on my fitness pal. I knew before I even started using my fitness pal that my eating habits were not good and to be healthy I needed to stop eating food that was so bad for me. Even though it took me over half the semester to realize that, I now can say I am on a healthier track in life and could not be happier. After I realized how bad the food was that I was taking into my body I decided to put a stop to it. I no longer eat fast food and I try to eat as healthy as I possibly can. Now I eat yogurt, salad, and subs a lot. I eat those things because they are no where near as bad for you as fast food is. Before my fitness pal I never worked out because I was too lazy to but that has also changed. Not only do I eat healthy now, I workout everyday. I am so glad that I have decided to make these changes in my lifestyle because I have started losing weight. Not only do I look better, but I feel so much better. I have a lot more energy throughout the day. My fitness pal really has helped me. It opened my eyes into a whole new direction of my life that I never thought was possible.
