Diary of Rick Mason

May the 5. 1822
After mouths of sailing on the never ending ocean, we could finally on this calm sunny morning see a coastline on the horizon “Australia”. Today is a day me and the rest of the prisoners aboard Providence II Have been looking forward to. Hope the guards aren’t serious about the torture and the one month life expectancy.

May the 7. 1822
It’s only been a couple of days since we docked on Macquarie Harbour prison, where we where introduced to our new cells and work areas quickly. It didn’t take long before we could confirm some of the horrible myths the guards had been telling us on the ship. People where bound up to a tree with there hands so they had to stand on their toes to reach the ground while the more unlucky where set outside for days without food or water in a tiny cage so small that arms and legs hung out, and yes not many survived it, but that’s one of the many punishments for getting caught trying the escape. So I might as well just start getting comfortable here.

May the 12. 1822
Iv been here for a hole week now and its a lot worse than anyone ever could imagine, we work 14hours a day in the baking sun while getting wiped, we get one meal less every day because the ship witch was supposed to arrive few days after the ship I was aboard never showed up, probably hijacked by pirates or sunk in a bad storm, anyway we are staving. Really considering an escape.

May the 16. 1822
Today at the work site I managed to sneak some tools back to my cell. Now I only need one last thing for my master plan to be complete, a map. Soon ill be out of this hellhole.

May 20. 1822
As expected the guards have found out about the missing tools and are on a massive search to find them. Got to hold low key for a couple of days.

May 27. 1822
Someone must have told on me because I have been in isolation the last week, incredible that a person who is sent down here by these people would help them for

In the article by Kevin Johnson, talks about programs that inmates are able to use for when they leave prison. With a sixty-six percent chance of returning after being released from prison a program in Chino California that trains prisoners to be a deep sea divers in order to find a steady job after they are released. The prisoner’s normally find jobs with the oil company for fixing or cleaning the pipes which is a dangerous and physical job which naturally deters others people from working there. Due to the pay rate (50-100 thousand dollars a year) due to the job being dangerous most people do want to do it, most ex-convicts do not return to prison and lowers the chance of returning to six percent. Another program is at a women correction…

It has been quite a while now since being on this ship, a journey to Botany Bay inside this cell. The food we have, the clothes we wear now. None of it was our own choice. But, I held my anger in and ate and wore what they gave. We convicts only ate bread, hardtack, salted beef or pork, meat, oatmeal, butter and cheese. We also ate vegetables, fruits and rice. Being down here with the marines guarding the ‘prison’, with other marine members coming down every few minutes or hours, checking on us. It’s not like we can escape.…

A true story of how a man was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death, May God Have Mercy exposes the imperfections in the criminal justice system and how it led to the death of an innocent man. Roger Coleman's case became the main story on nightly newscasts and prominent television shows such as Larry King Live, Nightline, Good Morning America, and the Today Show. Many crucial, yet harmful decisions were made that ultimately resulted in an innocent man's execution at the death house in Greensville, Virginia. The police, the prosecutor, and the Judge can all be held responsible for Coleman's death. However, the reason Roger Coleman was not acquitted of the murder of Wanda McCoy in the first place and thus in a position to be executed was because his original lawyers, Steve Arey and Terry Jordan, did not provide him with adequate representation, as required by the Constitution of the United States of America.…

When the fifty-six members of the Continental Congress signed the Declaration Of Independence in 1776 they never could have imagined the many revolutionary trials and challenges that the document’s significance of equality would ensue in years to come. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which allowed all those enslaved in Confederate territory to be forever free. The proclamation became a turning point in the aspirations of the African American race. The end of the Civil War in 1865 effectively ended slavery but did not openly give way for African Americans to have equal rights. The continuous struggle and persistence of the African American people lead to Jim Crow Laws that made them into second-class citizens. These laws dug deep holes for legal segregation between the races of black and white. To counter these laws the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed to increase racial equality and challenge such issues formed by segregation. One of the main leaders in this Civil Rights Movement of the N.A.A.C.P. was Martin Luther King Jr. He was able to prove to the African American people that he was committed to the dream of equality by not only continuing the fight after facing adversity when his house was fire-bombed, but by also speaking his mind to the eight clergy men that wrote about his actions in “A Call For Unity.” King’s “Letter From A Birmingham Jail” was written while he was incarcerated and came to be one of the biggest turning points for the African American struggle for racial equality. By systematically rebutting the assertions made by the clergymen, King was able to portray his personal views and suffrage-based opinions on segregation so that they could realize the injustice being inflicted on the African American people and choose their position toward justice or continued injustice.…

In my experience of reading the text, Behind a Convicts Eyes, I have learned many things about prison life. It has in fact changed my perception of what I thought prison life was like. Prison is in fact a fight for survival, and the weaker inmates will be used and abused by the stronger population. To clarify what I mean, many of the weaker prisoners are sometimes expected to pay for protection from other inmates, or they join prison gangs to be safe. According to the text, it would appear that the inmates actually have more control over their existence than I would have thought that they do. When I use this term, I mean it in the sense that the inmates use the system to their advantage, or at least those who know how to work the system. According to the text Behind the Convicts Eyes, p. 20, it describes the process in which inmates will actually manipulate the tests and clinical physicians to obtain medication in which they can then use to get “high” or sell for profit.…

The United States is home of the brave, the free, and the land of opportunity. People from countries all around the world come to the United States to better themselves, or to give their children a chance at a better life. Countries of all races and skin colors have come since the land of the Americas was “discovered,” white, black, brown, and yellow. However, there is a key color missing; the color that has been her longer than any other, red. How is it that the people who have lived off the land of America for centuries before the Europeans arrived are the one race that is given the least amount of respect? After the British defeat by the Colonies in the Revolutionary War the Natives lost the last of hold on their old ways. It eliminated the Proclamation of 1763 and opened the doors to westward expansion. Now 230 years after the war Natives are forced to live in secluded “reservations” that the American government has chosen as “Indian Country.”…

    Convict Slavery

Historians refer to convict slavery, which is the act of having people who are serving a prison sentence working as slaves. In this context, it means that historians referred to convicts from England coming to Australia to work as slaves. People would say that this is an accurate description of the convicts transported to Australia because they were treated like slaves and how they lived. However, this statement is arguable because they were cleared of their sentence, and were then free. They then had a chance at a new life or to return to England.…

    1. My entire career was spent at Computer Associates and while I can’t tell you first-hand about the pressures in other companies or industries I believe that CA was among the most aggressive in its pursuit of goals, a fact often relayed to me by my industry peers. Both the CEO and I exerted significant pressure on our teams to meet the goals that we had set for ourselves. As you would expect this has a trickle-down effect to others in the organization. While from this perspective performance was measured by internal goals at an executive level these targets were primarily driven by the expectations set by outside parties, primarily the analyst community. While institutional investors were very important their buy, sell, hold decisions were primarily made while relying on analyst information rather than because of direct communication with the company. There were obviously exceptions to this however the above was true in the majority of cases. Institutional investors tended not to be as industry savvy as the analyst community.…

The theme throughout Bessie Head’s “The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses” has to do with conflict and a resolve between characters. The conflict concerns two characters, one prisoner who goes by the name Brille, and the new warder, Jacobus Stephanus Hannetjie. Brille is a political prisoner incarcerated in a particular work span with other prisoners; the work span is called Span One. This story is filled with a few situations where a conflict arises between Brille and Hannetjie. As you start to read into the story the first conflict arises between Brille and the new warder Hannetjie over a cabbage that Brille dropped. Hannetjie is a new warder who is very strict and tries to push a hard line against Brille and the whole Span One. This conflict between Brille and Hannetjie starts to unfold when Brille drops a cabbage and Hannetjie says “Who dropped that cabbage?” in a thunderous voice. Another conflict arises again the next day to be exact when Brille is caught stealing grapes from the farm shed. The story starts to take a turn when Brille catches Hannetjie stealing fertilizer and then comes up with a clever way to make Hannetjie into the kind of warder the inmates really wanted to begin with.…

    My Mentor Reflection

I still remember the first step I took on the gravel road, wide-eyed and wary. Of the entirety of my 12 years on this earth, I was going to be away from my friends and family for the first time. When I told my friends I was going away to Camp Speers for a week they all had similar reactions, usually along the lines of “You mean that place we visited in 6th grade with the powdered eggs?” Most confused on why I would choose to spend a week of my summer getting eaten by mosquitos and away from the comfort of dramatic TV shows and a computer mouse. These concerns clouded my mind as I walked through the door of Cabin 9, only to be cleared away by the warm greeting of my new cabin-mates and counselor. As the week went on, I learned a variety of…
